unfortunately, this is what is keeping him from hitting restore - the music on his iPod is not all in his current library, so he'll lose some of it if he does this.

though, i agree, restoring is probably the best option.

... but i'm still freaked that when he connects the iPod to his computer, there's other music on there!

we thought about that. except he said he's had the iPod for 2yrs, and the music that mysteriously appeared on the iPod is new release ... last few months. i'll try and clarify that with him tomorrow.
