Ipod Video 30g screen cracks, replace? or other option?

hey all

my ipod video 30g's screen cracked for an unknown reason last night i presume as i got up and used it and it was cracked...

how practical and easy is it to replace a screen?
should i just leave it broken and as a 30gig shuffle?
should i sell and get around 50 dollars (or whatever going rate is for a broken screened one)?

opinions grateful
cheers

I have a spare screen, were are you at?

I could send it for the price of shipping, its not too hard to replace.

That happened to me a couple of years ago with my 30G ipod video. I bought a screen off ebay for $50 and replaced it with the help of a video tutorial from ifixipodsfast.com.

It was scary because you ended up removing almost everything to get to the screen, but it's certainly doable - I've got big clumsy fingers and even I managed it without breaking anything. The ipod is still running well.

thanks for the offer piratebryan,
ill get back to you on it

just back to the last post,
what tools did you need to do it?
is it necessary to use the opening ipod kit, as it looks like a small flathead could do the job?

You need something plastic so it doesn't scratch the surface, and hard because it's quite stubborn. It also needs to have quite a sharp edge. I ended up sanding a hard piece of plastic that was laying around from those old light boxes from school science experiements. I imagine if you had an old credit card or something similar it would do the job with a bit of sharpening along one edge. The case was actually the hardest part from what I remember.

The tool I was given with the screen which was supposed to be the "official" tool ended up being too weak and bending too easily every time I tried to pry it apart. Despite how easily it seems to work in the video.

If you used the flathead, you'd damage the case. Once inside the case, you need to remove some small, fragile ribbons and also unscrew the metal case holding it all together. Small jewellery screwdrivers are what you need in there. That video I linked to in my last reply pretty much shows you everything you need.

Sorry for not replying.

I used my fingernails to be honest, basically and blunt plastic object to go around the edge Other than that a small screwdrive (00 size?) its very very simple stuff.
