1st Gen iPod Shuffle
Hi
I saw that refurbished 1st Generation iPod Shuffles are being sold on the Apple Australia online store for $25. I've never had an iPod before and my bank account is still recovering from my Mac purchase. Plus I might want an iPhone when it comes out later this year, I'll see how well it fits into a pocket.
Is it hard to find songs once they're stored on the 1st Generation Shuffle or am I better off buying something more expensive? Is there a difference in sound quality? I could wait a couple more weeks and buy an iPod Nano if it's much easier to use.
Thanks

I'd wait a couple of weeks, first gen Nanos were a pain in the backside.

I've read that the 1st gen iPod shuffles had better sound quality than the rest of iPods out there. I have to find a link a bit later. I personally haven't had a problem with it.
Navigating isn't too hard, but it really depends upon how many songs you have in it. Its much like going old school and navigating your way through a burnt cd whilst driving your car. You'll eventually remember the sequence of your songs.
As a full fledged audio player, i probably wont recommend an shuffle for all your needs. But it is a good supplementary one if you are going to get an iPhone down the track...

I guess $25 is nothing these days.

Really? I might just go to a JB HiFi and see what the quality is like on other iPods. Either way it can wait.

I found the first gen iPod connectors very fragile compared to the current small 'dock' style. Many of the charging issues reported were caused by stress. The cheap no-name mp3 players on the market kept using the same 1st gen iPod shuffle design/cable varient with the same fragile port result.
I'd suggest taking advantage of the 'promo' offers out there, banks give them out, survey companies, credit cards, etc. Last time I had done one, my net cost was $0 spent and waited 90 days to get one

I didn't know about the promo offers. I'll hunt around for those promo things. I'm just a bit wary of any catche's those promo things have but I'll check them out if I find any. I must admit it would be nice to get an iPod for free or even a discount.
Have fun

I never found any problems with the ist gen Shuffles. In fact I thought that the connector on my Mini was more fragile than the Shuffle was. In any case, I always charged using an extension cable. I 'm not a fan of having anything rigid longer than a USB connecter connected directly to a computer anyway.

4 times the price, but I just picked up a 2nd gen nano from Apple's refurb pages. It's great. 2GB of space nearly fits my current MP3 range. Admittedly now I have a proper MP3, I'll probably want to add some of my CDs to it...
And when *cough* I get my iPhone, she can get the nano "back"... (cos of course, I told her it was going to be her nano... )
The added bonus of the nano over the shuffle is that you can navigate properly... though really, the shuffle in question only has 512MB... 120 songs max... I guess you'll just be clicking ">>|" a lot to find the right song...

I love mine and it is the best sounding iPod. I wouldn't get one if you wanted to try and play particular songs though, it's called a Shuffle for a reason.

Good idea Mr Hobo.
Never mind my wallet got over $100 lighter today at the Comp Now store (spent on other things). I wasn't going to spend that much (we've heard that before).
$109 for a refurbished 2nd Gen Nano sounds good. I might get that next pay day. Unless of course I'm tempted by the refurbished current model Nano, but that's another story .
