Buy Nano or Touch or wait for Iphone
Hi guys,
I'm in the market for a new Ipod, though i get the feeling of convergence coming along especially with Iphone hitting our shores this year (so the forums say).
question is: does the nano / touch and iphone hold their own?
I am primarily interested in listening to podcasts, so i'm thinking nano will be handy, but what of touch and iphone?
how would you seperate the benefits of theses ones and do you think that buying a nano would be unwise, is it near the end of its product life cycle?
lots of questions - appreciate any feedback.

definitely iphone, but you need to be ok with 8/16GB space only.
the touch is good as it has a browser/plays video beautifully (of course iphone does this as well)
otherwise if your hard up for cash i guess the nano

I hope there's a 32GB iPhone in the works.
I'm in a similar position to you. I've decided to wait for the iPhone and bought a 4GB nano to hold me over until then.

Depending how happy you are with your current mobile, the iPhone will give you the complete solution.
Assuming you love your current phone, then the touch will give you all the iPhone has (no camera but I assume your current phone will have that). Also the touch can come in 32gb if space is a real factor.
But if podcast are your go (feel free to subscribe to mine) perhaps the Nano for now will meet your needs. This will also allow time for the new iPhone to be released and you can then get that later.
If you don't want internet etc on the iPod then maybe an iPod classic would be best as you can get 80gb and above as storage and a slightly larger screen than the nano. Cost wise though you are then looking at a bit more.
I have the touch and love it. best thing I have though I am sure those with the iPhone will say it is the best (and no doubt it is).
Really from a money perspective the Nano will be the cheapest foot in the door for you right now.

If you're mostly going to be listening to podcasts, I'd say the iPhone is overkill. For that sort of use the nano would be perfect.

Purchase a refurbished 2GB Nano from Apple for $109 and keep it for your podcasts. Then when the iPhone comes out, either sell the Nano or keep it as a spare.
I work night shifts at a pathology company and the Nano is perfect for listening to podcasts whilst sitting at my lab bench. The iPhone is just that little bit too cumbersome to use in this situation (hands in gloves, pathogens floating around, etc).
Essentially my setup is as follows.
1) iPod 30GB video = music collection
2) iPod Nano 1st Gen = given to wife for when she walks
3) iPod Nano 2nd Gen (refurb) = solely for podcasts
4) iPhone = Making calls, taking pictures. No music.

well the main thing you need to decide on is that if you want to spend the extra money for the iphone, plus if you are going to listen to music all the time you also need to think of battery life the nano gets 24 hours. I use a nano and listen to podcasts every day, and i charge once week , compared to if you are going to be making calls on the phone plus listening to music..........i would go with a 8gb nano, i find it more than enough. And if a new one comes out they really cant do too much to improve it except more memory ?!?!?!

well i purchased ipod touch 32GB and Sony ericsson W880i. by following that, you will have awesome mp3 player with plenty of space and a small tiny phone when you go out for dinner. I mean, who wants to have some brick stuck up in your pocket all the time.... plus 8 and 16 gb sucks....
W880i+iPod Touch 32Gb =

I just have an iPhone - use it for all my music/movies and of course, a phone and mobile internet device.
If you're okay with changing things around often, it's perfect as it's all in the one device and well done (as opposed to other phones with music players and web browsers).
Don't dismiss the 80gb iPod Classic. They're only $270 refurbished on the Apple store and are great for holding movies and lots of music.

Here is my question to add to the mix.
Assuming the iPhone isn't going to be sold on Three for the next little while.
I would like the functionality of the iPhone but don't think I can justify the outright price and then putting it on Three (my cheap phone plan is too good to pass up).
Am I better off to buy a touch now, or wait till the end of September to see if Apple updates the touch or Three gets the iPhone by then.
What are people's thoughts?

Hi,
Well the touch you can get in 8GB for about $250 used, while the new iPhone3G 8GB will cost you, from the cheapest (vodafone) over $700 (new).
If you can justify the $400< price gap for an all in one device, get the iPhone.
If you couldnt care less about having a big screen and would rather portability, get the nano, if not, the touch.
Also, if you need more space, get a classic.
HTH,
Beau
