iPod mini Dock dissection
Has anybody tried to open up an iPod dock? I have an old iPod mini dock, the mini is long gone, and my iTouch doesn't fit in the mini dock because the dock isn't wide enough.
To me, the dock looks like it's in two parts, the electronics attached to the "rubber" base, and the plastic enclosure on the top making it look nice. Has anybody tried to open up a dock or in any way modify it? I tried google searches and can't find anything about dissecting an iPod dock.
Is it a viable option to pull apart an iPod dock or not?

I think all you will find is two connectors joined together by some wire.

That's all I want to find, the only real reason of dissecting it is to remove the plastic moulding allowing an iTouch to be connected to it.

If your going to pull it apart and make it ugly, exposing wires and the such, why not stick to just using the USB cable or selling it to fund purchase of universal dock. Would pulling apart the mini dock and taking the plastic off the top weaken the mechanism to the point that your touch may not stand up straight, and possibly bend the pins?

Yep, just pry the top white part off, and plug in your iPod touch.
I've done it with my mini dock, and it fits perfectly and works as expected.

Yeah, I just did it then out of curiosity. It is easy to pry the top off, works with the iPhone and seems pretty stable, and you can put it back together.

All good then. I thought once modded it would be irreversibly destroyed.

Nope, it just snaps back on and works just fine either way. The dock connector looks pretty strong, and holds my touch fairly securely. The only downside is the fact that it looks pretty ugly.

Well, I've actually got the universal dock insert that came with my iTouch, and was hoping to cut a hole in the plastic of the mini-dock at a size where the universal dock insert could kinda "sit" in there to add a little support for the iPod, if the dock inserts are the same size one *should* be able to use inserts for future iPods also with that method. Hopefully giving some life back to the dock.
But knowing that it seems to work without the plastic at all is good because it means that, although the plastic moulding is useful, and looks nice, it is still usable without anything if careful.
I could end up ruining the plastic moulding completely, but it would be *nice* to have a mini-dock become universal dock without IR receiver kinda thing. That was my intention, and it is good to know it's <marginally> possible.
