iPod Touch: To update now, wait, or JB?
As promised in my last iPod Touch thread, here are the follow-on questions!
(N.B.: I opted for the 16, pre-app update. Purchased TODAY!)
1. Should I update, and purchase the updates from the iTunes Store?
2. If YES, should I do so now, or wait for the SDK?
3. If NO, then I’ll need to JB it. There seem to be a million different methods, and some have issues. I’ll scour the appropriate sub-forum, but any other tips would be great!
Thanks again, all!

Don't the new ones come with the apps already there? I didn't think they charged people who bought from now on...

can you live without the new apps?
Yes - wait for the SDK, see what happens
No - do you want to pay for them?
- yes - buy them
- no - jailbreak

This isn't a new one. Stock doesn't appear to be available anywhere. ALSO: I saved a bit by buying a pre-app model.

Fair points, really. I want them, and I'm happy to pay for them. I ALSO want to play around with other apps.
I suppose if I upgrade, and pay, and the SDK is a dissapointment, I can always JB then. The cash isn't a major issue, and I'd prefer a (mostly) bug-free experience.

in that case, i'd jailbreak now. even after the SDK is announced, there'll probably be more waiting before many apps are released.

With the iPod Touch, if you jailbreak it, it's really easy to go back to the factory settings. Just pop it in iTunes and restore. There's no flashing of radios or basebands or bootloaders to worry about like the iPhone. There's no risk at all of bricking an iPod Touch.
May as well jailbreak it anyways

If you're willing to pay for the apps (as you should be!), you can purchase them and then jailbreak via ZiPhone, I tried and it worked perfectly.
if not, you can supposedly get them for free through installer after jailbreaking anyway.

I hadn't considered this option.
Is there a ZiPhone link/guide?

http://www.ziphone.org
Or do a search here on MacTalk.
I can vouch for ZiPhone as I have personally tried it and it all worked perfectly. Even kept my purchased January Software Upgrade. :-)
