Hi,
I have a 3G 40GB iPod and my son wants to buy (or should I say me to buy) a new iPod mini (and my wife and daughter want Shuffles....).
Since the new minis do not come with dock/firewire connectors etc., can I use my iPod dock with and iPod mini?

No, you can't. The iPod mini dock is much smaller. You can however, use the Firewire cable to connect the iPod mini up to the computer.

You can also use the cables and firewire AC adaptor to charge and sync your mini. Also, if you are very underhand about things, if you turn the iPod mini belt clip upside down at the right position it will give the mini the support needed and will fit in the dock.
