iPod Touch from the US

Hey guys,

I haven't posted here in a while but the community has grown huge!

I have a potentially silly question but here goes!

I want to buy an iPod Touch 16gb for the gf for her bday from the US, as I've got relos there who can get it here much cheaper than Apple sells it to us in Australia

I was wondering if there were any technical or software(ie power, firmware, interface) issues by using it here? It charges via USB so that won't be an issue, but does it come with a US wall point charger? I could j ust get an adapter. I'd like to get some sort of screen protector/case as well, are there any around the AUD50 mark that you guys could recommend?

IF anyone who has done this could shed any light or anybody else who would know, it would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

Neel

There's no difference between the iPods Touches sold in the US and Australia. They don't come with a charger (iPods haven't included chargers for a few years now).

As for a case, I have a DLO HipCase. It's damn good, and is around $39 I think (I bought it ages ago from epowermac.com.au)

I concur, I have an 8G iPod touch from the US. No problem at all.
I did end up buying a charger for it while I was in the US, knowing I had a spare AU clip on plug bit for it at home. The prongs on the US charger fold down, making the current USB charger very compact (and dare I say it, cute). The AU plug can't do this, unfortunately. Unless you have a dead Airport Express like me, the plug bit will have to be bought when you get back. The charger is dual voltage.

My iTouch has an incase rubber case (nice and grippy) and some Power Support film. It comes in a very attractive pink

As you won't know her cover preference though I'd recommend this, which you can find in the Apple Store and comes will all the necessary covers and bits - http://www.zcover.com/store/catalog/...roducts_id=552

/I'm also thinking of ordering one of these, so I don't need a wallet - http://ilounge.com/index.php/news/co...touch-classic/

Yep, he's right, although I've never heard of that case.

A case (or more protective cover) I would recommend would be the Invisible Shield. It's like a film that you stick onto the front, back, and sides of the iPod. I have one on my iPhone, and its awesome. It means I have really good protection (its made of the stuff that they put on helicopter blades to [rotect them from rocks and flying debris) and because its thin and see through it means I still have the small form factor and aesthetics of the iPhone/iPod

They are in the $20's as far as I remember, and an awesome product. One thing tho, be prepared to sit for an hour with the thing putting on the film, as its a really tricky and time consuming job. If your inerested I think the site is just invisibleshield.com or if not just do a search in google for invisible shield.

Legendary Guys

Much appreciated, I'll order it!

For those wondering, Amazon has it for 359.99USD which equates to about $415 here - a pretty decent $135 saving from the Apple AU store!

So if anyone has relos there who can ship it to you here, it's a pretty safe bet

Thanks very much for that info!

My gf's cousin setup their router but doesn't know the password to get into the config of the router, and its got a WEP password or has only certain MAC addresses that can be accessed.

Is it easy to get on the internet with the Ipod Touch or at least access the settings? I've never actually used one properly - just seen the reviews!

It's incredibly easy.

You just switch Wifi on (it's the first option in the settings menu) and it automatically searches for available networks. Just select yours, and you're set to go! It's way too easy.

I think it asks for a password if there's one set for the router. I don't know for certain as I haven't encountered that problem - our router's open (you don't need to worry about neighbours leeching when you're virtually isolated), so I had no problem getting on the net with my Touch.
