iPod Touch or iPhone? ... and when will it ship?
Ok, the iPod touch is out, the iPhone has dropped in price and the iPhone unlock is about to come our way.
The iPhone when it comes out will be at the same price point as the 16Gb iPod touch, $550.
Not locked to some exorbitant contract and much cheaper, the iPhone definitely seems like a more feasable option to what it was yesterday.
Is anybody else thinking on this same level? I really dont know whether to hold out on the touch or just wait a few months and get the added functionality of an iPhone.
Damm you Apple with your range of products. Each one has its own advantages....

I'll still go the iPhone, with the full feature set (i.e. with a proper contract). Just hope it gets here (officially) sooner rather than later, and with 16GB of storage (though that will probably be more expensive).

I'm not touching the iPhone till it is 3G. I've gone for an iPod touch in the meantime.

I was thinking an iPod touch while waiting for the iPhone... I'm not completely sold on the iPhone as I'm probably still going to have to have a seperate Palm for work anyway, so I may as well get a phone/Palm integrated and maybe just use the iPod touch seperately...

The 3G iPhone could still be another 12+ months away, so I'm thinking of just getting a touch for now.

I guess that you could always sell the iPod Touch on eBay. That thing would have a very reasonable resale value...if you keep it in good condition that is.
After watching the Keynote i knew that i have to have either the iPhone or the touch. But man, the iPhone might not get here for another six months....i really wana start playing around with those features. iTunes WiFi, Safari, Coverflow and movies in widescreen are all so new cool! I dont think i can hold out for the iPhone.

i'm leaning towards the iPod touch, since my current contract goes for another 19 months, and i'm not paying out to terminate my contract early just for the iPhone, especially since we don't know which telco it'll be.
plus i was always impressed by the touchscreen GUI - 8Gb will be enough for my current listening/viewing habits, and i'm waiting to find out what apps appear that will allow iTunes to be streamed over wi-fi via Safari (other than dot.tunes)

Could someone estimate what the cheapest per month mobile bill would be for an official iPhone contract in Australia...
Are we talking around the $50 mark or more towards $75???

I'd say ~$50/month plus an upfront premium for the handset.
As for the original topic, yes such a dilemma...
The iTouch gives you many of the iPhone features now but you'll still need to carry your mobile with you.
The iPhone gives you the works but its a question of if, when and how much!

i just gave in to the ipod touch for these reasons:
- the iphone is actually a pretty big phone, and i might want something smaller to carry around in my pocket... ie... my nokia
- I can sell my ipod video to my sis, and then the ipod touch when the iphone comes out. hopefully that should cover the upgrade cost.
- im not going to need to hack it to get it to work, and wont have any troubles with youtube
- i also study in new zealand for 8 months of a year where the telecom mobile who everyone is with and have great pre-paid deals dont use sim cards... and for the rest of the time in melb, and the contract wouldnt be worth it unless it could match my optus $5 a month.
- it will be in my hands alot sooner and i can play with it

- and as i type all of these reasons im feeling even better about my decision
so i got the 16 gig ipod touch and may upgrade later to an iphone based on how i feel about carrying something that size around all the time like i would a phone...

I'll get neither!
The iPod Touch has no e-mail client, or Google maps! That's a dealbreaker!
I won't be getting an iPhone; unless you can use them with whatever SIM card you want!
Anyway, The iPhone won't be out here until like 2087 anyway! Just like TV show and Movies on the AU iTunes store. We only got the AU iTunes store by accident anyway, IT WAS NEVER MEANT TO HAPPEN!
