goldcoaster: so far the challenge we have going is for everyone in the group to run 50km by Xmas. How quickly everyone gets there will probably help us set up subgroups for challenges which are a bit more, erm, challenging

Tell me about it. There is a 20km difference between second and third! (30km - 10km, respectively)

So someone has done 30km in a week or so! Should they be in the unfit/can't run/only walk group?

Anyone could easily do 30km in a week walking. Just means they are going for lots of walks or maybe really long walks.

That's true, but there is a big difference in effort between walking 50km and running 50km. I can walk large distances without too much difficulty, but having just started running, I can't manage too man kilometres in one go yet.
Should we clarify whether the challenge is to run 50km by Christmas, or just do 50km by Christmas? It doesn't worry me. I intend to keep running in my effort to develop some level of fitness.

Seriously?
If you can do this then I'll join. My gut has almost spread to Tassie.
I've just bought new running shoes which aren't Nikes and I'd rather use them as they fit me perfectly.

You certainly can.
For the short term I've stuck my sensor in a little cloth bag to protect it, and I just wedge that under my laces. But, there are also a number of products available to attach the sensor to non-Nike shoes. I've ordered the Marware Sportsuit Sensor+. Just waiting for it to arrive.

I don't think anyone here has the Nike shoes, do they?
I just put some double-sided sticky tape around the sensor thing, then attach it under the shoelaces. It works perfectly, and doesn't fall out.

Dammit, I just read this thread for the first time after avoiding anything involving fitness, especially jogging. I'm going to have to get one of these things now. I just got a new pair of shoes, so no excuses.
I'll post my email address here once I've got one and signed up. Looks like I'll have to get a nano as well so I don't kill my video iPod running with it. More punishment for the credit card.

Thanks that's good news. I have the shoes and I just bought a nano so I'm out to the shops to get the kit now.
Wonder how far the running distance is to the takeaway?

Let me put things into perspective for some. 50kms is overdoing it a bit. Just to run 10kms at a compfortable pace takes around 1 hour. 50kms a week is a big strain on the body and heart. Be careful.

It's a cumulative 50km by Christmas. That is, every run between when the challenge started and Christmas combined has to total 50km. The challenge isn't to run 50km in one go or in one week.
