I believe it's Nano only because it's a specific feature of the Nano firmware.
Edit: So the battery in the unit isn't replaceable or rechargable???

The battery on the device in the shoe is not replaceable and a new unit must be purchased.
Yes, it is a feature in the nanos firmware.
Apple aren't encouraging running with the harddrive based iPods because it might spark a few class actions.

That's a bit crappy. I'm sure they could've found a way to power it by kinetic motion...like the watches.

I just got one and purchased a new pair of Nikes for it as well (sadly as I couldn't be fu..'ed doing the shoe mod or waiting for the shoe glove etc to come out here).
I calibrated it for 400m. Took it for a run and compared it with my Garmin Forerunner 305 (currently considered the best GPS running device on the market). Garmin says 9.63klms and the Nike says 9.63klms - obviously same time and pace per klm. Very impressed.
One thing I did notice was the Garmin (which also has a Heart Rate monitor) indicated my calories burnt was 1032 compared to the 763 put forward by the Nike,
Went on the Nike website and has a looksie at the other runner - some very quick 5klm and 10klm times run in the world. In fact the top 5 and 10klm is Olympic and World Standard compared to when I competed in the 1992 Olympics.
Which made me think - how easy it would be to cheat. Simply tell the Ipod in calibration you have run 400m or 1klm when you have actually run 500m or 650m or whatever. Given the current level of the technology noone would be the wiser.

I never thought of it like that. I better not catch anybody doing this in our contest >
I gave it a test on a tredmill. It was way off I then looked on the internet and becasuse of the technology used you need to be moving foward. otherwise you wont get correct results. making contests in winter anoying

The Fluffy Duck mine is working fine on treadmills my home treadmill has no display to tell you what you are doing (its what I use most of the time) but I calibrated it on my dad's treadmill and it was pretty close before calibration.
