What's up with the SMH and the anti-Apple shit?

In this case it is merely reporting a "dubious" (toungue in cheek? I'm not too sure) inclusion of the iPod in Choice's shonky list - probably because it has brand name recognition, not because it deserves to be there.

If they were serious, they would've said "Dell laptop batteries" because of the exploding thing (they could've said Apple too, but I digress).

I guess being popular makes you a target for stupid journos, stupid lists and stupid publicity.

I just heard this on 4BC radio.

http://www.choice.com.au/viewArticle.aspx?...6+Shonky+Awards
The CHOICE iSHONK for Dual-level Shonkyness

Goes to the…

APPLE iPod
(CHOICE Computer, Sep/Oct 2005, and CHOICE, July 2006)
An iPod is a significant investment, so you don’t want your APPLE to be a lemon. And if there is something wrong with it, you’d expect an easy repair and warranty service. Podluck.

Level 1. Several readers complained about cracked screens, faulty batteries and problems with sound reproduction.

Level 2. APPLE doesn’t allow retailers to handle complaints under warranty (which is their obligation under Fair Trading laws) — you have to send your faulty iPod to APPLE yourself via Australia Post. And if they decide the fault isn’t covered by the warranty, you’ll have to foot the entire bill

My dad got a replacement iPod through the mail - and he said that the mailing system is actually BETTER then going in to a shop - he got his back very quickly (1 week from memory), and with less messing around then what it takes to get a mobile replaced.

Apple AUSTRALIA deserves to have its chops busted if it has provided poor warranty service, but to say the product itself is shonky is seriously misleading.

You only have to hold and use one to feel how solid, elegant and well engineered it is. If an iPod is a shonky MP3 player, I can't imagine what that makes the 100 or so other pieces of unfriendly plastic that are around.

I like Choice's criteria for shonky though: "several" people reported problems.

SEVERAL? Out of a product that last quarter sold 8.5 MILLION!!! Choice, I think you've been gamed by Apple's detractors.

By the way, the story made Digg:

What a load of bollocks. I've never had a problem with any iPod either I or my friends/family have purchased. They sell, like, 8 million of these things a quarter - there are bound to be a few units that aren't up to scratch. Geez. That's just consumer products. Go buy 8 million cans of coke and I'm sure you'd find a few flat ones too.

abc 702 (richard "head up my arse" Glover)

had a lady on this afternoonn about the awards, and she was talking about a number of items, and he kept saying, apple / ipods are bad, in the 30 mins before she was on, kept saying, the shonky's are bad news for ipod owners.

he is anti apple, anti ipod, he won't even call a podcast a podcast because it implies a connection to apple.

idiot.

yeah, mines 2years old, never missed a beat, still has a reasonable battery life. (Although I've always run it down completely then fully charged it)

BUT my brother has gone through 2. But his ability to have things break around him is quite extraordinary. The house has nearly burnt down twice, and I'm sure its just because he was just there, he doesn't have to do anything Shit just always happens to him. He has bad karka or something!

This is total shit, The SMH is just wanting page hits and Choice took on a easy subject, with no comparison to the rest of the industry.
