I have music on my laptop and want to compress the files before adding to iTunes. I know iTunes will compress it when adding to the iTunes library but I assume it will leave the file on the HDD in it's original size, and I want to compress that also.

So, I figure i will compress the original file first and then import it.

What is an easy way to compress several gig of music into more manageable sizes, say 320kpbs for MP3's.

Why not just import into iTunes, and then delete the originals?

iTunes will store the compressed version in ~/Music/iTunes/ unless you specify a different location.
