Hi all... as some of you may know I work at an Applecentre in Melbourne, and on the front desk in the service department there. I frequently deal with iPod issues: they make up probably 80% of the customers: somedays as many as 50 or 60 a day. Often the fixes are fairly straight forward: update the software, or even just restart the iPod holding the middle and menu button.
In all regards Tuesday seemed to be like any other day: it was busy, and I had about 5 people waiting to speak to me about their broken iPods. After dealing with these customers, the remaining people in Service were a group of private school boys, maybe year 10 or 11. One approached the desk and remarked "I am having a few little problems with my iPod." I hear this almost as often as "my ipod is broken" which just shits me as a comment, because OBVIOUSLY there is something wrong if you are coming into the service department. I never get people coming in to say "Hi mark... just wanted to say that my iPod works great and Apple make a fantastic product. Keep it up!" Although.. anyone who wants to do that is welcome. :P
Anyway, i asked the guy to get out his iPod so i could see if I could fix it, and if it was under warranty or not.
So this 16 year old bloke reaches into his jacket and plonks THIS on my desk:
Keeping a completely straight face, he remarks how it doesn't seem to play music anymore. Deadpan, I reply that it may need to be updated to the latest version of the iPod software, as this often fixes issues. We then cracked up and I asked how on earth it had happened. He replied that a friend had "accidentally" dropped it in front of a tram, and that it had also had water in it and been hit with a hammer. I then commented that it might be a bit hard to cover under a warranty, due to Apple's accidental damage clause in the policy. He replied that this was true, but couldn't i just give it a quick polish to bring it up to new condition before sending it to Apple?
I even was just able to make out the serial number in the huge tram-inflicted groove in the rear of the iPod, and unfortunately for the young bloke it was outside the warranty anyway. Although I did sympathise with him, remarking that it was bad luck this had happened out of warranty as Apple always try and look after their customers. His parting remark with a cheeky grin was "well I expected better from apple... next time I am buying a Creative!" to which I replied "or an iRiver: they would surely have survived... damn that shoddy Apple build quality." All up, it made what had been a stressful day a lot of fun, and I couldn't help but giggle as i watched them wander off to "drop it off the Rialto".
Below, you see the rascals themselves:
Good times. :P

I've got a horror story about an ipod customer.
Working at JB Hifi i had to deal with the mouth breathers. There was this one guy who walked in threw his ipod on my desk and said "It's f*^ked i want a new one". I immediately thought to myself "here we go". Anyway it was 18 months old, and at the time Apple would NOT allow us to take repairs and forward the item to them. The customers HAD to use the website and post the item of themselves (that's been changed recently i believe). I explained that the unit was out of warranty and even if there was any point sending it off i COULDN'T do it.. He couldn't understand what i was talking about and as mouth breathers tend to he started swearing and even physically threatened me. At this point my manager had rocked up and told the guy the same story as i did but in end said he would get the unit to apple. At this point my manager asked for a reciept but the guy responded with "You expect me to bring reciepts back from the UK.
Great stuff
