Hi all,
I have a music DVD - I've managed to rip it using MactheRipper, but would love to be able to extract the audio into aac onto my iPod, splitting the DVD sound into files according to chapters.
Has anyone done this before? How could I go about doing it
TIA
Steve

Use Audio Hijack it's brilliant for extracting audio from any application.

Thanks for the tip. I tried it out to get the music from a music video on a DVD, onto my iPod.
It worked as expected with DVD player, but I had a few hiccups using VLC. I was even able to convert audio from my headset mike to mp3 .
The only things to watch out for are that the destination (AIFF?) files can get pretty big pretty quickly, and that the freeware version is only good for 10 minutes of continuous hijacking.

If you feeling like hacking around on the command line, take a look at mencoder/mplayer. It's amazingly simple with those tools ..

Also check out WireTap, very basic app, not as feature-full as Audio Hijack. But it may suit your needs. It's completely freeware too.

Okay, here's the solution, for future reference. All of the programs I using are free.
1. Use MactheRipper to rip the DVD onto your harddrive
2. Using ffmpegX, open a VOB file, and "demux" it (using the demux tab under the Tools section) - I believe this is the mencoder part mentioned earlier. This will give you a .m2v file (the video bit) and at least one .ac3 file (one for audio, one for commentary, etc.)
3. Take the relevant ac3 file and convert it to AIFF using mAC3dec (it gives you an option to convert to mp3 but it doesn't work).
4. Use ReJoiner to combine all of the aiff files into one big aiff file
5. Work out track lengths, by consulting CDB database
6. Convert the aiff to mp3 using itunes (or whatever)
7. Split the mp3 file using Audion 3 - now available for free as it is no longer supported. You could also do this with QT Pro (in fact you could split the files in aif format, which would be better, and then convert to aac instead of mp3).
8. Add all the mp3 files to itunes
So that's 8 steps with 5 programs you'll need to hunt down (excl itunes) if you don't have them already.

oops. Looks like WireTap (now WireTap Pro) has been heavily upgraded since I downloaded the free version.
