I have had my iPod 20GB for one and a half years now and recently my harddrive gave up on me. I can't upload any songs anymore to the iPod (and seeing that I deleted all the songs while trying to fix the problem, the whole iPod is now fairly useless).

I was wondering if it is worth sending the iPod in to get it repaired, or if I might as well take the loss and buy myself a new one (or a different MP3 player)? Seeing it is not on warranty anymore, getting it fixed might turn out to be an expensive experience, yet I don't feel that happy just chucking the player that only 1.5 years ago cost me 500 AU$ into the corner.

Has anybody had any experience what price range we are looking at to get the harddisk repaired/replaced? Is it worth it?

Thanks for the feedback!

I think it would all depend on the cost of repair. If it was c.$150, then it might be worth considering, but i reckon it would be a good deal more, in which case you would probably be better off looking at getting something new.

I would look around and see if you can get a quote as to how much the repairs would cost. Just remember to only look at Australian-based repairs, you really don't want to be sending your iPod O/S. From a quick look in Australian Macworld, i found a mob called Synergetic who do iPod repairs of all kinds. www.synergeticaustralia.com. Seems to be that, for a replacement 20gig HDD for a 4g iPod, you are looking at $275 installed. It is up to you as to wether you decide to take this up, i personally would be looking at getting a new iPod but you may think that $275 is reasonable. Hope that helps!

Ah good - that gives me some idea as to how much it might cost. 275 is really border line... Have to think that through a bit. Seeing that it is one of the older iPods, it might really not be worth it.

Thanks for the help and the link.

Cheers,

Andreas.

Are you sure it's the hard drive that's died? The songs that you deleted off the drive, were they playable before they were deleted?

Maybe it's just part of the dock interface that is screwed? Might be worth getting it looked at to figure out just where the problem lies.

Hmmm... You'd have to ask yourself how much life is left in the battery.

We have just got a ipod. I'll be dissapointed if it doesn't last for at least 3 years.
