Free single of the week (12th December 2006):

Click the image to open in full size. Pick Up The Pieces by Paul McLaney.

From the opening refrain and the languid notes to the gentle plucking and wistful vocals, "Pick Up the Pieces" is a charmingly delicate entreat to love. The track is lifted from Paul McLaney's new solo album, Edin, which is a beautiful soliloquy to love.

As usual, the free link may expire.

Free single of the week (19th December 2006):

Click the image to open in full size. We Are Amphibious by Children Collide.

"We Are Amphibious" is a potent slab of energised fury from this volatile Melbourne duo. The blazing tune featured here as free Single of the Week takes a bit of evolution a long way. Maybe we all did spring out of the watery swamps eons ago, but Children Collide aren't trying to challenge Darwin - they just know how to make grand, surreal proclamations sound anthyemic.

Free single of the week (2nd January 2007):

Click the image to open in full size. Origami Tree by Dardanelles.

"Origami Tree" is a track from the debut of Melbourne's dark dance floor post-punkers, Dardanelles. The group has listed its influences as everyone from Johnny Cash to Kraftwerk, from the KLF to NWA. Believe it or not, you can hear it in the music - from the rigid, yet groovy rhythm section to the raspy, honest vocals. This track whips up a whirlwind of despair to a danceable beat - what more do you need?

I just think that it would be a great idea because I hate forgetting about the free download.

Anyone agree?
What for? I like the ability to go back and have a look back at the free songs and what people have said. Sticky is good, but why remove peoples posts. How would you like it if someone came up and removed your posts for no reason?

Free single of the week (17th January 2007):

Click the image to open in full size. Like It Like That by Neska.

"Like It Like That" is a provocative R&B cut from the Sydney artist whose debut Sex and Poverty first introduced that singer as a new, raw voice on the scene. This track goes further with a thumping club beat best suited for bumping and/or grinding (take your pick). Is Neska the "official sound of soul from Down Under"? Listen for yourself!

Click the image to open in full size. Number One by Custom Kings.

Melbourne's Custom Kings have enjoyed a stellar summer. Following a massive Australian tour with John Butler Trio in December, Custom Kings have recently played the Falls Festival and will soon join the Cat Empire, Blue King Brown, and many more at the Chill Island festival. Try this taste of the band, "Number 1". It's taken from their current EPMerchant Songs.

Free single of the week (31st January 2007):

Click the image to open in full size. Me Michelle by Starky.

Starky's self-titled debut is full of bright moments, but we thought "Me Michelle" summed up the group best. The guitars cut through the riff-raff and get to the point. These boys are here to be lovelorn and distraught. Their only escape? The healing power of dance-punk! Or dark, purposeful punk-glam with a 4/4 beat, to be more specific..

Free single of the week (7th February 2007):

Click the image to open in full size. Sirens by Temper Trap.

Melbourne's Temper Trap has been a permanent fixture on our iPods since the band's music first crossed the iTunes desk. The depth of their sound and songwriting maturity belies the members' relatively tender years. But it's the energy in their songs that grabs you. The group's eponymous debut EP is alos available on iTunes. The boys are currently showing their wares up and down the East Coast supporting Kasabian. You'll also be able to check them out soon at Laneway and V Festivals.

Free single of the week (14th February 2007):

Click the image to open in full size. The Guide by Borne.

If you like Coldplay and Snow Patrol, we think you'll love Borne. Led by vocalist Cameron Tapp, the Aussie indie band Borne explores rugged emotional terrain via melancholy piano lines and euphoric guitar rock. Last year, the band sent a demo CD to our Sydney office that went on to become the most successful free single in the history of iTunes Australia.
