does anyone know if there is a way to get iTunes to name imported songs in the format artist - trackname.ext, instead of the default trackname.ext.

I've used other CD rippers that do this, and it seems like a more logical way to name files, especially if you have songs that have been covered by multiple artists

I remeber once seeing an Applescript somewhere that changes filenames to this. Try googling applescript+iTunes and see if you can find anything.

iTunes only renames your songs if it's told to keep your iTunes Music folder organised. If it does that, then the songs are labelled

trackNumber trackName.extension

and put into folders for each individual artist. It means less useless information when viewing the files in Finder (since it's far more hierarchical this way).


I used to subscribe to the artist - trackName.ext philosophy too (from Winamp, mainly), but I've grown to appreciate that the iTunes way is better.

kit - I'm sure that the good folks at Apple had the best intentions when they designed iTunes that way they did, but IMHO, if you move files around between different platforms and computers, it's a lot more helpful to have the artist in there as well.
