Issue with transmission program

Hi,

It's been a while since I have been using transmission and just recently that the program chews up pretty much ALL my available (inactive) RAM at the time when i am running the program..... Usually I have about 1.2GB inactive but when i run transmission, it only leaves me with 14MB inactive RAM....... poor me.....

It causes lagging issue when i am downloading BT by using transmission and watch DVD on my MacBook Pro.... I tried another BT program "Azureus" and no luck with that program as well. Both of them chews up my RAM.

Could anyone please give some general directions in fixing this issue?

Thanks!

How much RAM do you have?

Have you got the latest version of Transmission? The torrent(s) you are downloading, do they have a great many peers? If you open Activity Monitor (in Applications -> Utilities) how much memory is Transmission using?

Thanks for the quick reply, Currawong

Ok, first of all, I have 2GB RAM and I am running the latest version of transmission. I will need to wait until i get home tonight to check how much RAM does transmission use.

I've also noticed the latest version of Transmission crippling my Mac Mini with its 1GB of RAM.

I checked the activity monitor after i got home last night and surprisingly that the transmission program only chews up 50ish MB RAM. But when i open up transmission, around 600+ MB RAM goes from free to inactive?? Could anyone help me with that?
I dont really understand what are the different stats of RAM means. I think there is "used", "active", "inactive", "free" or maybe one more stat.....
Could anyone care to explain that to me? And could anyone figure why my MBP goes slow when i am running transmission.

It is a bug in the app and a rather nasty one.

Inactive memory is memory that was recently used but is marked for use with other applications. You'll find, for example, if you copy a large file over a network between two macs, a similar thing will happen - both machines will fill up with inactive memory. It's the data that was copied that's filling up the RAM. While it doesn't seem to be of benefit, Mac OS X caches the data this way in case it is a file who's data needs to be accessed again, such as with a file server.

Speaking of HUGE ram issues, Firefox 3 isn't the most bloated, ram hungry application I use on a daily basis anymore - iTunes 8 is.

I saw iTunes 8 using some 480MB of "real" ram. No joke.

Shame I didn't get a screenshot, but it was really, really not nice.

Yeah, my Macbook and Mini are not exactly welcoming iTunes 8 with open arms with the memory hogging going on.

I used to have that problem with Transmission, and it was a known issue.. grounded my entire machine to a halt.. I then gave up and went back to Azureus.. and sticking with that.. Sorry to the developers of Transmission.. but yeah.. I rather not have my machine grind to a halt overnight just because I run an app overnight..
