Windows & IE Testing suite

I'm looking to set up a testing suite for web development, obviously with the focus on testing sites in WinIE - what would be the best solution for that?

Obviously there's VMWare Fusion vs Parallels, but also which version of Windows should we look at? I guess our focus will be on IE6 and IE7

Would appreciate anybody else experiences with such a setup.

Cheers,
N

Don't bother with Windows unless you're looking to run Windows apps...if you're just going to be using IE, you may as well just use ies4osx

After all of the various pain the neck combos, I have to virtual machines, one running XP Pro SP2 with IE6, and Vista SP1 with IE7. I specifically don't have updates turned on so I get a worst case testing picture

Wow - didn't know about that one, and it'd be great if you didn't have to install Darwine...

To the OP - if you're still looking for a virtualisation solution, running full-bore windows, then look no further than VirtualBox. It's basically a free version of VMWare/Parallels - give it a go, the price doesn't hurt!

Other than that, try Crossover if you want to go down the Darwine route - Crossover does pretty much the same thing, 'cept that CodeWeavers charge for it.

If it's for web dev, you'd want to be testing other browsers in Windows too, since the Windows versions of same browsers for OSX are different, so having a Win install is probably a good idea anyways.

If I didn't use my PC for doing this, I'd probably just go with what you mentioned, VMWare Fusion, Parallels, or possibly the new one (that's also free) VirtualBox. I'd just go with the cheapest copy of XP you can find (if you don't already own), and use something like Multiple IE Installer.

Edit: Beaten to it about VirtualBox :P

I would suggest making sure it works in IE8 as its due to be released before year end.

Yeah, I know about (and actually have) ies4osx. That unfortunately doesn't give a 100% accurate experience, so is pretty useless.

Where would I get a cheap copy of XP these days? Does anyone still sell it now that Vista in it's hundreds of iterations has been available for some time?

+1 for the XP+IE7/MultipleIE combo.

Works great - I use it on my 2 development machines (my desktop PC and my MacBook under VirtualBox).
