Double-click, Double-click - doh?
G'day,
Is it just me?
Using mouse to navigate in OS X's Finder...
I double click a folder to open it. It opens that folder up (within the original window).
Without needing to move the mouse, as it's aimed at the next folder/file I want to open, I double click again...
Nothing happens.
I need to move the mouse a bit, or wait a second or three before it will recognise my second double click...
Is that normal??? Anyone else find it annoying???
(OS 10.4.9, but also witnessed in previous versions... Maybe it's been fixed in Leo?)
cheers
cosmic

I think it's just you. I can continually dig further and further into my file structure while leaving the cursor in the same position, as long as Finder finds subdirectories.
You might want to go to 10.4.11?
And I am on Leopard 10.5.4, if that helps.

I've seen that happen, but only with USB Keyboards / Mice if either USB end or port is a little dusty or greasy.

I just tried that here and experienced the same thing -- the second double-click in a dive through folders isn't recognised unless I move the mouse between double-clicks.
I think I'll add that as yet another reason why OS X Flound-- sorry, Finder, is made of extreme fail compared to pre-OSX Finder.

Phase: You obviously missed the fact that cosmichobo said he uses 10.4. And as he runs, shall we say, machines at the trailing edge of technology, he may have turned off spotlight.
Exocet: why bother using a keyboard when there's a perfectly good mouse there?

*chuckle* Very nicely put, Brains. And very accurate. My main machine is my eMac, which I purchased exactly 4 years ago this month! From there it's all downhill. The sound just gets better...
Hmm, now I somehow feel like "trail"er part trash...
I *know* that keyboard navigation can be quicker... but, I like the mouse... it was one of the original features that sold me on Apple Mac...
Glad to see someone could confirm I'm not crazy...

Tested this on my MBP running 10.5.3 using the trackpad and I have the same problem. I don't normally navigate this way, so I never noticed before.

I don't have this problem on my iMac G5 1.8GHz running 10.5.4
Haven't tested it on anything else yet, but I don't recall ever having a problem.

Don't have the problem on my 12" (10.5.4), and don't recall having it in the past either.
That being said, I typically don't use Icon View (live in column with arrow keys), so don't use it much.

Column view means single clicking, better keyboard navigation, better navigation when combined with a Mighty Mouse's scroll ball. Just better all around.
Get on it!

I debate that. Whenever I encounter a column view Finder window after I've hit Cmd+Shift+U and go to type in say Terminal... I always end up selecting TextEdit in the /Applications folder instead because Column View decides it wants to let me know that the Utilities folder is inside the Applications folder, and it takes a while to shift focus.
Icon view is the only tolerable view in Finder IMHO.
Oh, but the icons must be sorted (by name). If they're flying all over the place it's much harder to navigate with the keyboard.
