Quicktime and H264 format .avi

Currently my version of QT does not play H264 formatted .avi files - that is, I get only audio but no picture. Is there a codec or something I can add to the QT library?

I ask because I can't seem to play any Dattebayo releases with QT and have to resort to using VLC. Not a big problem but would prefer to just use one single program.

My only suggestion is for you to download Perian.
It's a whole bunch of codecs, and should sort your problem out.

Yep Perian enables Quicktime to play just about everything. If that doesn't solve your problem VLC would play it.

Or you could just download the latest version of QuickTime from the Apple website...

Does what work for me? Downloading from Apple or re-installing software?

I had a problem last weekend where I couldn't play QuickTime movies in Safari because the plugin wouldn't load. Rather than stuff around with plugins and preference files, I just downloaded from the Apple website, ran the installation package and my problems were solved.

Edit: Whoops, missed the most important part of your post (.avi). Yeah, as ementis said, Perian would be your best option. My apologies if my careless reading of your question implied your problem was so easily resolved by a visit to the Apple webpage.

You might be able to re-package them as .mov files and get them to work using FFMpegX. Rather than re-coding, there are video and audio passthrough options. I'm not sure if this will help but might be worth a try. From vague memory, I think Quicktime doesn't support some of the h.264 encoding features.

That seems a bit strange considering H.264 is Apple's codec and Quicktime is Apple's video player.

Thanks for this. I was having some trouble with some .avi files where I was getting video but no audio. This sorted it all out.

.avi is a wrapper which can contain many different video formats. It commonly causes issues, particularly with video/audio syncing. It's an inferior wrapper, but is used by default because of Windows.

I have also been looking for a solution to this.

I would like to play my h264 avi files from frontrow (quicktime) and not have to use VLC.

Does anyone know of a quicktime plugin/patch to fix this... Perian does not.

I dont want to have to convert my dattebayo releases into another format.

You're right. I looked it up. I think I got confused because the first time I heard about it was in an Apple keynote. They make it sound like they've automagically created everything themselves.

If you cant be bothered transcoding to quicktime friendly format, i suggest Divxdoctor2. it Makes a copy and just strips out all the Avi code and replaces it with .mov rellevent files in . Does it super dooper quick.
