Bizzare Idvd 08 Problem

So I have tried many solutions on this issue and nothing seems to work.. and the problem is bizzare

When i run iDVD it opens but the program runs super slow the themes keep getting stuck while moving but all the other programs on the computer run fine.

AND

If I have iDVD open but I am clicked on another program window for example: safari window in the background the iDVD theme starts running smoothly BUT the moment i click back on idvd it slows down !
I have deleted the pref file, deleted the themes and restarted.. didn't fix it
i deleted all the folders and reinstalled iDVD still didn't fix it !

BUT

i created another accoutn and opened idvd in it AND IT WORKED FINE !

So..

i am wondering since i have some other quicktime supporting components installed if that could be the issue.. I doubt it.. but this is all i can think of....

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP ! This is driving me nuts !

Could you please list the other Quicktime components as some are known to cause issues?

I have a list I will dig out of QT components/codecs I know for sure cause havoc.

appleintermediatecodec.component
applempeg2codec.component
divx decoder.component
divx encoder.component
flip4mac wmv advanced
flip4mac wmv export
flip4mav wvmc import
XviD codec 1.0 alpha.component

I also have Perian installed. (compilation of quicktime components i believe)

Try removing this one as previous version caused some havoc with different apps and also QT itself.

XviD codec 1.0 alpha.component

I have all the others as well as Perian 1.1 which covers a lot more and seems to work well and so far no issues for me.

Hmm

This may help not real sure.

Try cleaning all the system and user caches, temporary files, font caches, rebuild launch service database, run all cron scripts, and check for corrupt plist files and repair the permissions and also check the HD for errors these can have some strange effects with apps not working quite right.

This can be done easily using a freeware app called mainmenu.

After all the above a restart and see if anything changes.

If errors are found with the HD you will need to boot from the install DVD and run disk utility from it to repair any.

These are steps I take first and have for a while and in most but not all cases help.

cleaned it and restarted it... and still no change...

i guess the only key here is that it works without a hitch if i make another account... thats gotta be the only clue to how to go about this.. but i'm no whiz so i don't know... i would just hate to have to install everything from scratch.. that would be such a pain

In the new account are there any installed QT codecs/components?

If not try installing moving one at a time as this will also eliminate them from the problem.

I will also install idvd 08 and the codecs you have which I don't alreay have installed to see what happens and do some testing as to what maybe be the cause.

I possibly have the source of the problems. I have discovered Perian 1.1 is imcompatible with QT 7.4.5 on leopard and mpeg 2 files.

I temporarily removed perian after seeing similar to what you are seeing an for me they disappeared.

The perian side looks like the next revision will fix the mpeg2 issues. No timeframe when it will be released as yet.

well i realized I had uninstalled perian yesterday and well i made sure all of it was removed today.. But still it did not work.

I booted on the setup disk and ran disk utility it fixed some permission. .but still nothing..

In the other account I checked the Q components and they were the same.. however I did remove a few from the main account and still nothing ..

Looks like I'm running out of options. I guess the only thing left to do is try to reinstall iLife 08 but I am worried that my saved files will ge deleted ? project files etc.. And I will probably have to reinstall all the jam packs too which is a pain !

any ideas left ? this is just plain weird.

Silverhawk, close iDVD and go to your home folder>library>cache>com.apple.idvd and delete that folder

Re login to your computer or restart and then restart iDVD see how that goes
