I hope you might be able to help me with a issue I am having.

I have old work files copied to my documents in my OSX documents folder under my profile from my old PC.

What I want to be able to do is is get write access to these file with in here so as I can access these through the VMware Share Folders icon on my XP VMware install. I need write access for many reason but mainly as I want to access Quicken files. I can not open the files as it says I need write permissions to them and when I look it only has read. I have changed the permissions on OSX so as there is read and Write access to everyone and also shared the folder and have SAMB sharing on as well.

Have any of you got any ideas how to do this or best way to have files on OSX that can be fully accessed from the VMware machine?

Have you read the VMware Fusion help? There is a topic 'Moving and Sharing Files with your Mac' that explains exactly what you need to do in the virtual machine settings, including making the shared folder read/write.

If you have tried the steps outlined in the Help, but are still having problems, please provide more info about the exact nature of your problem.

[edit: I just created a new folder in OS X in my home directory, added it to my VMware bootcamp partition, and was able to edit the contents of the shared folder in XP, without having to mess around with OS X permissions or SMB shares. ]

Yes I had a quick look and from what it says I seems to have done.

I will have to have another look as I just have not had a chance to look at this problem since I posted.

Basically I need to share files between OSX and VM Ware install of XP (It is not a bootcamp install). When I try to access files with in the Short cut created by VM Ware on the windows XP desktop it say I can not save or change files there as access is denied. I can browes the files with in it but can not make any changes. I have checked the permissions with in XP and it will only allow read access.

To make things super easy, you can configure VMware Guest to see various shared folders on your mac. ie. Share out the iMac Desktop for the current user, that way from within the vmware guest you can go \\.host\vmware shared folders\desktop or something. I will see if I can make a few screen grabs from the beta I have installed (the same can be done on the non beta, but I dont have it installed so it will work just not look exactly the same).

No need to enable sharing on either OS, it's handled internally by the VMware application. You just need to enable it for the current running guest.

Oops ran out of time and played PS3 instead. See if I can do it tonight.

In the meantime, try creating a new folder in OS X under (say) Documents, and save a text file there.
Then go into Fusion, start the virtual machine, and in your Virtual Machine settings, create a new shared folder, pointing to the new folder you just created in OS X. Make sure to make it read/write. Click the Apply button, not the OK button.
Go into the virtual machine and see whether the new shared folder appears under \\.host\shared folders\ or in the shortcut you have (hmmm, I've never seen this shortcut on my own Fusion installation).
See if you can edit the text file that you saved there.

This might help show whether the problem is related to the specific folder/files you are trying to use, or whether the problem is in the VM settings or somewhere in XP.

In the latest non beta build, the shared folder stuff works fine using the gui for the guest settings. Never had a issue with it not working.

jastormont - under Virtual Machine > Settings, click on 'Shared Folders' (below 'System Hardware' and 'Removable Devices') - have you got shared folders Enabled, or Enabled at Power On?

The other thing to check is have you got VMware Tools installed on the guest (XP) ?

I have not had a chance as of yet to look at this problem as I have been so busy with work this week.

I might get a chance to look at this tonight or if worst come to worst it will be this weekend.

Thanks Petronius, I had this same problem. But I wanted to add if you click on the name of the shared folder and option for 'Read only' will show. I found that mine was checked. Uncheck this and it worked fine.

I am glad because it I spent hours on this and have had to make double copies. But now all is well.
