You might have to uninstall the beta, reinstall your previous version and just point to the same virtual machine that is there.

The other problem with installing the Fusion 2.0 beta is that it overwrites the existing copy of Fusion; you can’t keep both versions installed. So really, unless you have a dedicated test machine or partition, I wouldn’t recommend installing the public beta—at least not this first release. But that’s why I’m here—I’ve upgraded to Fusion 2.0 and have been using it since Tuesday morning. I’m risking my virtual machines so you don’t have to—OK, so it’s a minimal risk, and I do have backups just in case things go horribly wrong.

Fairly easy process which I did the other night (after 30 minutes off using Fusion 2 Beta 1).
1. Drag Fusion 2 Beta 1 to the trash can from the Applications directory
2. Reinstall Fusion 1.1.2
3. Run your WIndows virtual machine and goto the Control Panel and Add/Remove Programs --> VMWare Tools (this is to downgrade all the drivers and stuff)
4. Reboot windows virtual machine
5. Reinstall the VMWare Tools
I found this worked successfully with out any side effects.

Even easier.
Mount the DMG used to install the Beta, and then execute the Uninstall VMware application contained on the DMG.
Then grab the DMG for the previous version and reinstall as normal.

Does that uninstall the tools in the associated VMWare images though (e.g. tools installed in Windows XP and not Mac OS X) ? I dont think it does (but I could be wrong)

It ONLY uninstalls the VMware Application (it doesn't touch the guest machines or anything inside guest machines).
VMware Tools is just an application in the guest, you just uninstall it. Then once you have previous non beta VMware application installed. Fire up the guest and reinstall the previous VMware Tools it came with.

ok i dragged the vmfusion icon to the trash from applicatios, also got rid of it from the bar thing at the bottom of the screen.
then run the dmg installation for the 1.2 version of fusion, all went fine, restarted the computer
now when i go to open windows i get this message
"File "/Users/w_kirkhope/Documents/Virtual Machines/Windows Vista.vmwarevm/Windows Vista.vmx" was created by a VMware product with more features than this version of VMware Fusion and cannot be used with this version of VMware Fusion.
Cannot open configuration file /Users/w_kirkhope/Documents/Virtual Machines/Windows Vista.vmwarevm/Windows Vista.vmx."
what the hell does this mean and how do i fix it? should have not bothered with the beta, same old story "if it's not broken, don't fix it"

Ouch, I've got this bad feeling like there was probably a very clear warning notice with the beta saying "THIS BETA WILL MODIFY YOUR VM FILES, SO MAKE A BACKUP COPY BEFORE YOU OPEN THEM IN THE BETA VERSION OF FUSION". If there was, you're out of luck unless you use Time Machine.

All may not be lost. In the beta "Virtual Machine" menu there is a "downgrade virtual machine" option. I assume you do this before uninstalling the beta, and presumably it will open OK in the stable version.
I'm sure I saw instructions for downgrading on the beta website:
VMware Communities: Community: VMware Fusion Beta Program
Edit: See responses here:
VMware Communities: Space Search
I know that in addition to uninstalling you are supposed to zap some of the preferences, application support files and receipts.
Edit again: These are the files to delete before re-installing:
• Users/<user name>/Library/Preferences/com.vmware.fusion.plist
• /Library/Receipts/VMware Fusion.pkg
• /Library/Receipts/Install VMware Fusion.pkg
• /Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion
• Users/<user name>/Library/Preferences/VMware Fusion
After doing so, the instructions tell you to reboot the host machine.
(From Download Uninstall and Reinstallation of VMware Fusion 1.1.2.pdf downloaded last night when I had to do it, but can't find the link now.)

Hi
I went through this myself for my virtual machine running from my boot camp partition. The equivalent file for you might be in your documents folder instead of Library. Sorry, I do not know if it is the same pathway for a 'true' virtual machine.
I found that, I needed to go into my account in 'my places' on the hard drive and:
open library/ application support/ VM Ware fusion/ Virtual Machines/ Boot Camp/ and then delete: %2Fdev%2Fdisk0.
This removes the virtual machine files that have been created with the Beta. Then reinstall Version 1.
This worked for me. You will need to retype your Vista Product Key, I think, as it changes Vista when creating your new virtual machine. All is working again for me.
Best wishes.
PS Goatcatcher is right to mention the hardware downgrade from the forums. Thanks for pointing this out. Best advice so far.

Why are people uninstalling the Beta? I've had no issues with it so far (in fact I bought Fusion because of it).
Regards,
Shane.

Well, these are the things it was doing to me:
a. I have a H:\ in Windows mapped to my iDisk (using VMWare shared folders). If I open a MS Word 2007 document and then save it - it deletes the original file - and then generates an error message in Windows saying its lost connectivity and cant save if (effectively deleting the original). Rebooting, etc. does not solve this issue. Oh, saving the file locally (E.g. My Documents folder in Windows XP works without issues - its only the iDisk mapped save)
b. It was having several rendering issues in Unity mode
VMWare Fusion 1.1.2 does not have these issues. If it didnt just delete files on me I would have tolerated it - but deleting original files and then not doing a save - nah.. thats just bad

It started to crash on me and then I was unable to get it to open my virtual machine. All sorts of problems. Forums have suggested similar issues from what I have read.
Glad you are enjoying yours though.
Cheers
