Ripping a DVD down to a 700mb avi
I've got mac the ripper and toast 8, is either of these better than the other for the particular task I want them to do (see title), or is there some other specialised software that's better at this sort of thing, Ideally I'd like to rip it down in a single step.
Cheers.

Try HandBrake
Free and gives you plenty of options too (though I can't remember if it does avi or not?)
VisualHub: The Universal Video Converter for Mac. but this costs around $30
ffmpegX a DVD, SVCD, VCD, CVD, VOB, DivX, XviD, H.264, PSP, iPod, MP4, MOV encoder for Mac OSX I believe this is free too

How about to DivX?
Which Toast does natively, and can be tuned to fit on a CD.
2 steps, but.

The only app that will rip the Hollywood DVD's you own is Handbrake.

I don't care too much if it's avi or mpg or whatever as long as it play fine in quicktime or vlc. I'll check out DivX too.
Thx

The easiest way to use Handbrake is to select a preset that will load the appropriate values for the type of viewing you want.
Just select the "Toggle Preset" button and select "update Built-in presets", to get the newest settings off the Handbrake site.
For viewing on a computer I'd use the "Normal" setting.

Definitely go HandBrake. I use it to rip my DVDs to play in iTunes (they'll work in Quicktime too) and on my iPod, but you can bump up the quality if you don't need it to work on an iPod.

Handbrake is a winner - although, on my eMac it takes about 9 to 10 hours to rip an entire movie with 2-pass encoding (I leave it running overnight). I believe new Core 2 Duo's can do it in more than half that time.

I have to agree Handbrake is the way to go. And the new version has a whole bunch of encoding options for heaps of devices.

yep!! handbrake is a winner
Mac the Ripper is great for removing the macro vision etc, but it wont encode anything..
so.. Mac the Ripper for keeping everything as is,
Handbrake awesome for encoding down, or getting things ready for the ipod/itunes...

what about if I want to rip my dvd's onto an external 2 TB hd and retain all the DVD quality (5.1 SS, best picture quality, menus etc etc).
I have bought visual hub, but what do you all recommend?

then mac the ripper is for you!!!
from memory these rips will still play in Front Row too..
if size is no issue, then do as i do, and keep ALL the info.. Mac the Ripper wins.. though have found to be a bit buggy at times...

Yep, don't compress the DVDs, just use Mac the Ripper to get the files off the DVD and remove the copy protection.
