I'm gonna be the odd one out and say handbrake sucks, but I am not sure if theres an alternative. Version 9.2 can't do xvid (it's in the list but crashes the program if you have an intel cpu as documented on handbrakes forums), I was trying to convert an avril dvd to avi, after I learnt I have to actually use mp4 to avoid it crashing, I thought I'd b set, but it couldn't read anything but a 2 min file off the dvd, so I used mac the ripper and put the whole dvd to my harddrive.

Now I just pick the vob file and convert to something besdes xvid right? wrong.. although lets you use vobs as the source It crashes the program. Back to handbrake forums I go and find it has limited support for vobs and will only open the most basic kind (the not ripped off a bought dvd kind), Apparantly my 6 year old avril vob is tooo much for it.

So if they ever make it have xvid support again and fix the vob issue i'll like it, but currently this app wins my most crashing app award on osx. Like 20 crashes in 30 mins, all of them reproducable.

Sadly still have to use the windows box for this.

Handbrake cannot remove DRM, that's why you have to use MTR first. Is that what you mean?

Also try looking at ffmpegx for conversion of vob to avi. Can't remember, but I'm sure it does this.

No soon as I select a VOB in handbrake (specifically from the avril -my world dvd that ive ripped to my hard drive with mac the ripper (MTR does indeed work on intel is a very nice program) , handbrake just crashes , every single time. The forums said it has very limited support for converting VOB files. I did rip "Hackers" dvd perfectly with handbrake though, just I had to use mp4 instead of AVI. Which is just an issue with 9.2

I pefer AVI because i have a divx hard drive recorder in the loungeroom.

Thanks I'll have to check out ffmpegx, handbrake team recommended installing 9.1 or just waiting till they can fix xvid support, I just really downloaded it at the wrong time. Then tried to rip a disc it didn't like..

If youve bought visualhub, then that would be the go.
I use it in front of handbrake and it works a treat. Just drag the video_ts folder into visual hub and it will spit out an avi of 700mb
