What are the issues with doing this.. I assume the prev owner could keep the CD key and use it buggering up your updates.. or is there no risk of this?
Im thinking of grabbing it on ebay for 70 bucks?

as areal stated, no keys with any Mac OS distribution.
You are right though, the owner could still illegally use that copy that he sold to you but it wont affect you in any way.

Hey, does this also apply to iwork 08? (Sorry to hijack the thread, seems like a good spot for it rather than opening up a new topic)

You are supposed to get some 'proof of purchase' slips in the box as well I think. If it is a shrinkwrapped copy then you'll be fine...mor than likely they will be in the box though (unless you're just buying the disk).
In any case, there are no serial numbers or anything, as other have already said.

iWork has a key. iLife and (plain) Leopard don't have a key.

Leopard doesn't come with any version of iPhoto or iMovie or Garageband but you can use any version that you have now. For the install you can do either, upgrade or clean install. Upgrades usually work pretty well with OS X but the last few times I have done a clean install.

One of the issues is that it is eBay perhaps and you don't always get what you think you paid for (mostly but not always)? You need to consider that they might not be selling you a retail version of the OS, e.g. like a machine specific installer/restore DVD that is just never going to work for you. It's a possibility to consider.

Just ask for a photo or more information about it such as whether it's a retail package (boxed copy) or not. But the possibility is there for a restore disc or CPU drop-in disc to be sold. It should be in the auction details for transparency. Ask before you buy.
