For anyone who's wondering, the 12.0.1 update doesn't fix the stupid "invalid context" error messages that spam your console logs. "Last message repeated 7263476374 times" ... ring a bell?

I've just received (through work) and installed Office 08. My first thought, even though it looks a lot more Mac like, was that I was expecting it to load a lot faster on my MacBook after using 04 for so long. After a fresh restart seventeen seconds from clicking in the dock to being able to type. Is this normal?

Exchange server interaction is essential for me; I log in via a VPN on my current Windows laptop, so I have no issues doing the same from a Mac.
But if the server hasn't been set up to use IMAP (I think that's what I need?), how hard is it to set up OWA?
The last thing I want is to have to unstall VMWare + Vista / XP + Outlook to get my email and calendar!

One thing missing for me (coming from PC's) is the right click "send to mail recipient" option available in Windows. Office 2008 doesn't seem to offer this and its a handy little tool to have. Also resized images which was nice.

I expected Office 08 to run faster as wellnot being so became very noticeable when i successfully installed it (despite not meeting to hardware 'requirements') on a G3 iMac.
OT iWork 08 runs much fastervery clear on the G3 (i was also able to successfullt install and run it, again despite not meeting to hardware requirements)

I've launched it heaps of times and it makes no difference. I've tried turning off the WYSIWYG font menu but it made no difference.
Out of interest, what version of OSX are you using? I read one article on the web that made it sound as if the slowness is specific to 10.5.2.

Do you have CS3 or the current Keynote, and if so do you see the same issue with these apps not launching faster after first run?
What spec is the Mac your using? Apologies if you have already said so.

Keynote and Photoshop CS3 both launch normally. My specific set up is a MacBook 2.2 GHz (Santa Rosa) with 2GB RAM, running 10.5.2.

Nope. BTW, it seem to be a relatively common thing - both nickd87 and paulharrop above are experiencing the same problem, there's a thread about it at apple here and another over at microsoft's forum here.
