How to make documents open with a specific application?

Hey all, im not sure if this is possible or if its easy and i just dont no how to do it BUT what im after is someway to configure OSX (tiger) so that i can open certain applications automatically. for example.

in windows you could configure applications to launch automatically the "open with" "allways open with" dialog would come up and you could choose what file types open with which applications and this would open automatically.

This made things so easy and quick. I hate the fact that i have opera as a default browser when i dont even use it at all and quicktime launches when i prefer VLC to be the stock movie player. Most importantly when i download torrents it will never prompt me to use transmission ... windows makes all that so simple and its automatic.

can anyone help me with my queries

ps: i use firefox as a ie

You should be able to set the default browser in Safari's preferences.

You can also use Get Info (CMD-I) on a file, expand the "Open With" triangle to change the default application for double clicking files.

PS: Firefox doesn't make a good IE.

There's also a 3rd party utility (someone else will know what it's called) that allows you to set the system-wide settings for all your file types - but you don't really need it, since you can use the Get Info method without any great difficulty.

BTW you don't need scripts to make OSX a better operating system, you just need to learn how to use the existing features!

get info is pretty easy. the other app to use is rcdefaultapp, which is configured through your system preferences:

I don't understand the problem

I have VLC set as the default player of some video files. Transmission automatically opens when a .torrent file is dropped on the desktop.

I'm happy with Safari to be default browser but I'm sure it can be changed if I were to decide to favour another one.

I don't have any special scripts or what not. Just set up with Get Info as described in post #2.

I wish it was as simple in Windows.

Caution using rcdefaultapp it's a can of worms, very difficult to remember what or why you've done with certain files/extensions.
