OS X's unsung heros: Grapher, Quartz Composer and DigitalColor Meter

I use these apps all the time, but you don't hear people talking about them too often.

Grapher: 2D and 3D graphs. Find it in your Applications/Utilities folder.

Quartz Composer: Realtime 2D and 3D compositing. Can be used for all kinds of cool stuff, including screen savers. Find it your Developer/Applications folder, if your have the developer tools installed.

DigitalColor Meter: Pick any colour on screen and copy it to the clipboard. It can copy in a few formats, including hex (#BCBCBC) and NSColor style ([NSColor colorWithDeviceRed:0.7 green:0.7 blue:0.7 alpha:1.0]). Find it in your Applications/Utilities folder.

All free.

No probs. It's crazy to think there's shareware utilities that do the same thing as DigitalColor Meter... and most I've seen are much worse.

USD$16

USD$12

USD$22

Just bizarre.

Also worth noting: you can grab colours with the standard OS X colour picker and use the HEX picker extension to copy HEX values anyway... no need for DigitalColor Meter.

Edit: HexColor Picker here: http://wafflesoftware.net/hexpicker/

Ive havent really had a close look at Developer Tools before, but wow, as someone who is just starting to get interested and learn about what makes OS X tick, there are some awesome apps there!

Grapher is great! I use it all the time for uni stuff

I've had some fun playing around in Quartz Composer, but I've been having issues between the results shown in the development environment itself and what is displayed when used as a screensaver. Haven't found a way around the problem yet (it has to do with depth mapping/sorting) as there isn't a whole lot of documentation out there for Quartz at the moment ... but hopefully it will be fixed soon.

Otherwise you can still achieve some amazing effects ...
