Yeah it should be on its own partition.
If you've successfully created an image of Leopard on a Blank external HD or to its own partition, then any of the following will let you boot into the installer.

1/ In system prefs, select the start up disk as 10.5 on external drive
2/ Hold option at start up chime until the screen shows up which volumes are available to boot from, then choose one.
3/ double click the "install Leopard" icon in the external HD.

:O Thanks! And the partition has to be the same size as the Leopard DVD?

When you say you've created an image; is that it? If so you need to 'restore' it to the drive:

Now just go into Disk utility within Tiger, click an external drive partition (I assume there is only one), go to the 'restore tab', select the source file (Should be the leopard dvd image you created). You might have to select a destination. "To select a destination disk, drag it from the list on the left" [Your external hard drive].

I guess you may want to click the 'erase destination' checkbox [Backup before!] then click 'restore'.

The DVD image is 'restored' on your external drive, you should be able to boot off by following HDriveKilla's instructions.

The installation should allow you to select your internal hard drive for the Leopard installation and things should run smoothly.

No it doesn't. For example, I have a 12GB external HD that I used to image Leopard to, as it was the smallest HD I had lying around. It still has 5.44GB free space on it.

follow these instructions strictly.

1/ insert your leopard dvd into your dvd drive.
2/ open Disk Utility
3/ select Restore
4/ drag the Leopard icon (from the sidebar in disk utility), into the Source pane.
5/ drag your Ext HD icon into the Destination pane.
6/ select erase destination if necessary, otherwise hit "Restore"
7/ let it do its thing
8/ once done, follow the above instructions on booting from an external FW HD.

That should really be about it.

Sorry to say it Dude, but I think you might be "Pissing in the wind", so to speak. I think you will find there is a problem with your drive,so until you get that sorted nothing is going to help, so here's hoping you have Applecare.

How long did you leave it running before turning off?

The first boot sits at that screen for a long time before continuing.
