How to block ads that slide in safari - running 10.4

Is there a way of blocking ads that slide in from the side, eg as in employment ads on
www.smh.com.au ????
There was always one near the top of the page which held about 4 or 5 headline stories, I got used to this one in a way.
Now, there's a box on the right hand side with job ads, this one I find irritating.

And I've noticed these ads are appearing more often on different sites.

SafariPlus, which I've been using successfully for ages doesn't block them.
PithHelmet I've just tried and haven't had any success there.
Safari AdBlock is for 10.5 as far as I can see.

Help appreciated.

edit I've not updated to 10.4.11 so I'm still using Safari 2.0.4

PithHelmet - direct download.

download Safari 3 while you're at it, perhaps.

allows Safari users to have the pith on or.... the pith off...

No offense ClockWork, but does this work, sounds like you are saying try this, see if it works...
Can you say you see no sliding ads on smh.com.au when PithHelmet and Safari 3 are installed.
PithHelmet and Safari 2 doesn't work for, unless my settings are wrong.

Thanks
Paul

Yes - you're right there. You'd need Safari 3 to run Pith Helmet - and to run Safari 3, you'd need to upgrade to Mac OS 10.4.11 - which would then lead to requiring a QuickTime 7.3 download and then an iTunes 7.5 download - and so on.

Best to stick with - something like SafariBlock v1.1.5 - tiny download - works with Safari 2.x and Mac OS 10.4.x.

Cheers Paul,

While being, perhaps, a little extreme in your situation. You *could* modify your hosts file to just have all advertising servers point to the IP address of 127.0.0.1 or 0.0.0.0 (if you have Apache running).
I do that on all my machines and don't get any advertising. It's fantastic (and reduces page load time and bandwidth consumption).
You can find a pretty up-to-date file to download here.

BUT does it work !!!!!!!

I'm prepared to do all the updates, I've just been playing safe when everything is working well.

But I do want to get rid of these sliding ads if I can.

Can someone please try this link
http://www.smh.com.au/news/world/bur...135354742.html
Is there an ad, a sliding ad towards the end of the page on the right ???
If there isn't please tell me what software you are using, safari version and adblocking software.

Thanks Appreciated

Had a look at the links you posted. Bit over my head, alot over my head. I'd need a few hours/ days to get a handle on it.
But it might be worth it. I'll certainly look more at this option.

Seriously - don't bother with the updates - PithHelmet is Shareware - which means you have to pay for it.

Just download SafariBlock v1.15 - and be content with the lack of content.

Peace Man.

I just tried it using Safari 3.0.4 with no adblocking software installed.
I don't see the roll-in ad you are talking about

Thanks

I did wonder if Dan had only quickly looked at that link, it all seemed too easy.
The roll in ad takes a few moments to get going.

I'm downloading the last 10.4 update at this moment so I might try clarifying things before I install.

Will also contact SafariPlus developer and see when we might expect an update and also if the roll in ads will be blocked. It really has been a good addition to Safari, I'd like to continue using it.
There is a beta out but I'm in no hurry.
I really like how you get the outline of the box of the thing that is being blocked, but if you want to see it, you just click within the box and it loads, it's great software.

If you turn off java and Javascript in Safari 3.0.4 then the ads don't appear to slide in. that's the way I normally run my browser except when I enter known sites that I know require one or the other.

Hmmm, perhaps scratch that, it may have just run through to the last ad and not reset.

*Sorry! no time to test this again just now
