Did you use the 'Install Mac OS X' application on the Leopard install disk? You can also try pressing 'c' as the computer starts up. Or do what Purana suggested!

Restart the machine and hold the option key as the system chimes.. then when you get a set of icons show up on the white screen, click the one that matches the Leopard Install DVD in the drive. It will be a CD/DVD icon.. clicking it should start the boot from the install media.

Lol sorry, had to ask obvious questions first. Do what Purana suggested, that might work.

I've tried that as well (restart the machine and hold the option key) but it does nothing and it comes back to Tiger...

Is the DVD that you are using a new boxed version? or one that came with a different model Mac than the model you're trying to install it on?

  • Are you using a wireless bluetooth keyboard? It may not detect the option key being held down.
  • Try pressing 'c' when you start up instead.
  • It may not be the boxed version of Leopard...

If those aren't the problems or do not work... I'm stumped!

I think you need the boxed version (CD that you buy in a Leopard Box, not one that comes with another Mac) to update an older machine... but I may be wrong.

domzo is right - You can't use the DVD that came with a machine on any mac, it will only work on that model of Mac. You need a boxed retail version.

Ohhhh really? But is a new and original DVD of Leopard.

Why we can't use it on another Mac? Is legal for Apple to do this?

Yes, perfectly legal to do this. The Upgrade DVD that Apple provide with brand-new machines is there to cover their backsides -- Apple are pretty generous in allowing machines bought almost a whole month before the release of 10.5 to get 10.5 for free. Everyone else who wanted 10.5 has to buy it.

The other thing you should be aware of is that the Mac OS X 10.5 Upgrade DVD is only for Intel based Macs -- your iMac G4 just cannot recognise the disc to boot from, and never will.

Technically, if your other Mac was purchased before Oct 1st 2007 (no matter what type it is) then if you want 10.5, you must buy a retail boxed version of 10.5 to put on it.
