If you go into the preferences in EOS utility, you can chance the option, so there's no linked software, to EOS utility. Then it will just save the images in your specified folder, without the any error prompt.
I just found this setting, and right now im using 1 hour on shooting some ice melting in a glas, with some fruit color in. Look good so far.

I tooled around with CHDK a little bit with the point and shoot. If you get the right version you can run a script from the memory card that will do timelapse, and some really cool stuff like lightening shots using motion detection. Just have to wait for the summer storms.
