Disk Utility issues...DVD-RW erase not available

I am trying to erase some DVD-RW disks. The Disk Utility has the option to erase "greyed out", so I cant. I have tried numerous things like checksum the entire disk, verify, but that didn't help.
Not even sure what Checksum actually did to the disk, but it took a long time

I would also like to know how to format DVDs in the Universal Disk Format, and how to re-name DVD-RW disks. The Disk Utility only allows for formatting in Mac formats.

Tks.

OS 10.4.11

In disk utility:

Try selecting the device icon and not the volume icon. The erase option should be available.

If you still have problems, come back and let us know.

That was one of the things I tried, but still "greyed-out"

Tks.

I 'shouldn't' need it because I have erased disks previously with Disk Utility.

Does Toast allow a UDF format & renaming?

Tks.

Actually, no. They were burnt on the iMac, I'm trying to erase them on the Mac Mini.
Should that make a difference?? Both are using the same OS version.

Tks.

The discs aren't locked are they?
Command+I and see if the lock box is ticked .
Or check your permissions for R/W for that disc.

Edit : You may also find that those discs aren't compatible with the Mini. Try changing brands or type of disc and then you may find one that is compatible with both the iMac and Mini.

Thanks Stewie. The disk is not locked......have R & W permissions.

The Mini has only a Read drive so I am using a LaCie external. The funny thing is that I have erased these before on the LaCie when they were recorded on the iMac.
It seems that something has changed....a setting maybe?
I'll keep searching.

Tks.

Just a long shot, but are you sure that they are -RW and not +RW drives? I know some earlier drives would burn only +RW or -RW.

Check under "About this Mac" "More Info" "Disc Burning" to see what your mac thinks the capabilities of the drive are.

Drive can do both.

Tried something that worked....used a DVD rip application to do a Quick Erase, then the Disk Utility let me do a full erase....weird.

Anyway, problem solved for now.

Tks guys.
