ripping & burning DVDs

hey guys, my sister wants me to burn her box sets of anime so she can keep them in a safe place. So i have tried ripping one of the dvd's with mac the ripper, full disc extraction, then withtoast 8 i goto burn dvd, select from video_ts file, it encodes it, then burns it afterwards.
Now, that all goes fine mostly.
But when it either tries to verify the cd it will fail. always toward the end.
or if i choose not to verify it. It will play in the dvd player until the last hour possibly ? and jump alot, have pauses etc. Is there anyway to fix this? another program or is their tricks behind it? i have tried not touching the computer at all, and no change.
I am using a new 15" macbookpro 2.2ghz with 2gb ram and the 7200rpm spinning hdd.
anything i can do guys?

You might need Popcorn.
It sounds like it is slightly too big to fit on the DVD in one go.
Popcorn is made to compress the info whereas toast doesn't.
Popcorn and Toast are from the same company BTW.

Edit: I'm incorrect about Toast not compressing. Sorry!
I just use MTR and then Popcorn v2 and get great results.

Does the video_ts file produced by MTR play ok?

I haven't ever had problems with toast, but maybe try http://www.dvd2one.com/ this not only shrinks dvd's to fit a single layer, but also has a very good burning facility.

One other thing. Practice on re-writeables. It's a whole lot cheaper. Once you get it to work, then put it on more reliable media.

Rip first with MactheRipper then put the file thru DVD2one (brings it to 4.7gb) then into Toast DVD-Video from Video TS

http://www.brothersoft.com/downloads/dvd2one.html

Your file was too big. Oddly Toast doesn't tell you that, even though you probably have auto compression selected with 'fit to disk'

Woops... Sorry about the dopey link.. this is correct...
http://www.dvd2one.com/
I just realised my version is older and doesn't burn, the latest looks better in every way. Well worth having.

Yep. That's the recommended way.

I used to have this exact problem with an external burner and certain brand DVD's.
When I changed the to another brand and the DVD's to Verbatim, the problem went away.
Also try burning at a lower speed - like 4X not 8X for instance.

I have been having problems with Toast 7 & leopard producing similar problems.

The best results I get are from "burning" an image file in Toast (after MTR in your case) then opening that file (in Toast) and "copying" the image file to the DVD (with Toast). I know it sounds a bit daft but it may be worth a try.

The compression to fit on 1 DVD works this way where otherwise it doesn't. It is a 2 step process but doesn't take much longer. And yes do try with re-writeables while you are testing.

One other thing you could try is a Dual LAyer DVD and don't compress.
Expensive - yes! But the results are even better.
