Updated VMWare - no network connection

I have updated the evaluation version of VMWare and now the network will not connect within the vmachine, I have tried NAT and Bridged but get no network address. The dhcp server is not accessible (including with NAT which uses a virtual DHCP server)
I uninstalled the older version of VM but not the virtual machine. Then did the install -
I'm running Vista in the vmachine.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Lot's of ideas -

Fix the IP address in Windows, rather than use DHCP. This will help show if your TCP stack in windows is good or whether you have a simple DHCP problem.

When you go to NAT mode you should be able to ping the host - yes or no?

When you go to bridge mode and give yourself a fixed IP, try to ping that address from another PC. After that, go and check your active ARP entries and see if the MAC address can be seen or nothing at all. If you've got no ARP entry then the VM is goooone.

When windows is "dead" can you ping your own internal loopback address (127.0.0.1)?

If VM is totally invisible you could try reinstalling Microsoft networking.

Make sure your windows firewall is turned off... unless you're on the internet directly...

I've got the same problem, installing Linux in VMWare Fusion Setting an IP address manually doesn't work either.

Thanks Ralph,
When I got home from work I started VM to try your suggestions. I got the network setup wizard and selected the work network selection. Once this had finished, the network functioned correctly. I think that reinstalling the VM software caused an update restart to be needed by Vista.
I am going to stop and start the Vmachine a few times to check it will consistently work but all seems fine now.
