Meh. I can code in C, C++, Objective C and Perl (and a bunch of other slightly more esoteric languages) and I find Excel too laborious to write anything complex with.

Numbers is great for what it is. Anything more complicated I use a real programming language for :P

That's pretty much the consensus. I don't think Pages is meant to be competition for Word as much as many people might think. Some people need massive functionality with unbounded customisation. Most only need the bare basics, for it to look pretty, and be easy to use -- Word has far more functionality than the majority of people will ever use -- and that's the user Apple is targeting.
