On the back of news that Symantec [insert spitting noise here] is about to kill Norton Utilities (which I found good back in the days of OS 9 and its predecessors), I thought this from Mac OS Rumors might be of some interest:
Quote:
According to several sources, Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger may include a huge upgrade to Disk Utility, incorporating features users have been asking about for years.
[snip]
Apple has ambitious plans to make third-party system/disk repair utilities all but obsolete.
Along with greater system-level support for disk images and improved Disc Burning code that will allow for "live" disc burns - no Finder copy to a virtual disc; just select the folders/files you want, and drag to the Burn icon.
[snip]
Among the features we've been told to expect are:
DiskWarrior-like directory rebuilding. [snip]
Improved Permissions Repair. [snip]
System Integrity Checker. [snip]
It is not yet clear whether Disk Utility under Tiger will be able to carry out major repairs to the System if it finds problems with its Integrity Checker, but at least users will now be able to use an official Apple tool to debug such issues.

I've done a bit of creative scissor-work for legality and brevity ( :P ), but the full article can be seen by clicking the link above.
So what's everyone's first reaction?

Sounds fantastic! Whether 10.4 will support tray load iMacs though, is another issue.

Sounds good to me
No-one knows the OS like Apple does, so I would expect the quality of their utilities to be the best.

I don't see why 10.4 wouldn't support tray-loading iMacs. Going purely by what lost support in previous versions isn't the same as what may happen with 10.4. Taking a guess, the reason 10.3 didn't include support for beige G3's had to do with support for things like the floppy disk, built-in SCSI and built-in video. There were also major issues with the IDE controller. Since the majority of those things were abolished with the iMacs, I'd be fairly sure they'll still be supported.

The only reason i said that, is because that's really Apple's way of trying to get you to buy a new Mac. Also, the IDE controller in the tray load iMacs is similar to that in the Beige G3 i believe...if you add a drive bigger than 8 gigs, you need to partition it so that the Mac OS is installed within the first 8 gigs of the drive.

OI! STOP! Nowhere on the net is there any suggestion that 10.4 wont support tray-loading iMacs...you're just guessing because 10.3 stopped support for Beige G3's. That doesn't infer anything!

Ok. The only reason i bought it up is that the only G3 Mac i have is my tray load iMac. (Yes, i know a lot of you will say i need to upgrade, but i am broke!)

How do I put this gently?
Do you realise this could be seen as quite insulting by the author of the original message? I don't know about you, but I come here to chat about computers, not grammar ... :P
Just my two cents.

About time...
I just spent 6 days running Diskwarrier 302 on my G5 to get back all my Master Data.
I got it all back... pweh!
but Apple Disk Utility said ALL is OK - Apple... it aint OK when the disk won't mount!
This is the second time I have been fouled by Partitioning a large HD under OS X.
And the Partitioning was only 4 weeks old!
All my other OSX HD's have only 1 Partition - and they never go wrong.
I just thought 250G was too big and 4x58G partitions were nicer... wrong.
Lessoned learned again - now all my data is on the new RAID Box... so I can't complain now.

I heard it won't support G4s.
it's only G5s it'll run on - and even then, only the liquid cooled models. the ones with 2GB ram installed. Needs 200GB to install it too!
and it'll cost $799!
