Yer, google search says that iChat doesnt have the support for Jabber to show nicknames. That was 2005 info though...maybe it has been updated...not bothering me too much.
Edit: Seems it is a problem with iChat not recognising VCard data which is how nicknames are stored via Jabber...must be a fix for that.....
Is about the only thing stopping iChat from being a complete MSN alternative....that and lack of email notificaions...not that I use shitmai...I mean hotmail anyway! Doesnt bother me!

I really want to move everything to iChat. I totally love it, but the only thing that stops me is the fact that you have to have separate windows for each account.
For me that would mean AIM, MSN, gMail and of course Skype. It's all too much. I would be happy with a combined iChat window and the extra Skype window. Or maybe I could just stop talking to my MSN friends until they become mac users.

Haha...I have been having a major clean up of my MSN contacts since setting up iChat. Its amazing the amount of people I have added back in high school but never once spoken to!
With regards to consolidating all of the contacts into one window..apparently the only option I could find would be setting up multiple Jabber severs for one Jabber account. By that I mean, where I selected MSN (msn.jabber.linuxlovers.at) I could choose additonal severes for my Jabber account (AIM etc.) which would put all of those contacts into the one list.
Apparently, video/audio chat etc still works this way! I am yet to try though...
I am starting to really love iChat now too. I think the iPhone got me hooked on the bubble interface and now I have customized emoticons etc, its great!

There are AIM transports available as well. You can have most things in a jabber window. I use aim.jabber.no, msn.jabber.no and icq.jabber.no. I've registered on the jabber.org.au server. gtalk is already a jabber client so you just stick in the talk.google.com address for your account. I am pretty sure theres a yahoo.jabber.no as well but I don't use it.
Skype of course is a whole different kettle of fish, but I would probably rather use the native client anyway.

You need to follow Andrew's original instructions. Download PSI, and work from there. The thing is, whilst iChat is pretty good, it doesnt allow setup properly (ie, doesnt allow you to set up the transports etc)
Get it from http://psi-im.org/ (and PSI is a nice little client in itself!)
I use jabber.org.au as my server and thats where I have set up my jabber account (and You MUST have a jabber account before you can do any of this, its your login).
You don't have to use transports only available on the server you register on. The way jabber works, it lets you use *any* server with the transport. I spent a lot of time poking about before I found jabber.no. You could register your account right there if you wanted to, I guess.
Where Andrew speaks of "Service Discovery" you'll find you can choose MSN, AIM, Yahoo and ICQ. Plug jabber.no into the address bar in the service discovery window and hit return, they will show up there fairly quickly
Good luck

Good info kyte!
For anyone finding compatibility issues with MSN emoticons, I have made a fix. I have added most of the common MSN emoticons to replace the iChat ones which I didnt really like - couldnt see them properly). I have kept the same iChat shortcuts for the ones I replaced, but in order to improve compatability, added the MSN shortcuts. That means if you are sent MSN emoticons from your MSN using contact, most will show up in iChat
I would happily post the modified files and .plist you need to get it working but have nowhere to host it Can I attach it to the forums?
I aim to try and get the whole set on there, but really need to study! Will have it done by the next week or so!
Cheers

Kyte,
So if I want to set up gtalk and msn, I would need to use a different server for each. Gtalk should be set up as a jabber server which I have a login for but I guess that if I wanted to us jabber.no I would have to set up an account there too, just for the use of the transport?
I have been trying to add gtalk to my jabber.org.au account in Psi, but the Service Discovery cannot find talk.google.com.
Am I on the right track?

Just add your gtalk account in ichat. That's what I did. Its already on a jabber server, no need to set up a transport. (There arent any)

I think mate, that in PSI, in service discovery, you can type in jabber.no up the top bar and try and find talk.google.com.
I havent tried this yet as I only have the one account.
Can someone confirm if Video/Audio works this way?

Ok,
I think I am getting a bit lost here.
Here is what I am trying to achieve:
2 iChat windows.
one with AIM &
one with MSN, gTalk, and jabber.org.au
My understanding is that I am trying to attach gTalk and an MSN transport to my jabber.org.au account and that I use service discovery to do this? Once these are set up, I only have to sign in to jabber.org.au in iChat to see all jabber accounts.
Am I on the right track?

continuing...
Is it easier to just forget about jabber.org.au and set up a new account somewhere that supports MSN transports? If so, which one?
Then is it possible to set up gTalk in iChat after attaching the other jabber account to gTalk through Psi?
