I log into iChat using gtalk (at least I did on Tiger.) I was never able to successfully complete a file transfer.

Now I'm trying to work out how to set up gchat on Google Apps with my domain host. Not proving easy...

perhaps file transfers aren't meant to work in gtalk at all?

Well file transfers in the Gtalk app (windows) were released in July 06.

In Leopard, they have a Google talk option in iChat, but that doesn't support file transfers
Maybe some time in the future...

Yes, AIM supports file transfers (and so would dotMac).

In iChat I find that sometimes I can send/recieve files through Google talk and an msn transport to msn people, but I'm not so sure about iChat to iChat, or iChat to Google Talk client on Windows.

IMO, if it's really important, you could email it instead, after all, you'd have Gmail set up in Mail if you had Google Talk set up in iChat... But then again I have slow internet and prefer to email things rather than send in convo windows.
