Application Enhancer causing Leopard Install Issues?

This article is looking into some of the 'blue screen of death' issues occurring with some Leopard installations.

Unsanity's Application Enhancer could be the cause of some.

Does this mean that both Clear Dock and Smart Scroll X shall cause my Leopard to not boot?!?

Damn. I can live without C.D but iPhone-like scrolling I just can't live without.

The problems seem to occur if you are doing an upgrade install to Leopard and you have Application Enhancer installed on your Tiger OS.

I got this email from Unsanity today addressing just this issue.

Make *sure* you have APE 2.0.3 or later installed *before* you install Mac OS X 10.5. If you have an earlier version of APE installed before you install 10.5, you may exhibit one of the following symptoms upon booting into Mac OS X 10.5:

- Your goldfish may die.
- A strange dog might bite you on the street.
- A friend may punch you.
- Your computer may catch fire.
- Your loved one may leave you.
Easy fix I would think, download the updated APE.

I got struck by this...

I upgraded before the official release even so had no chance of a warning. Can confirm it causes major issues and is responsible for the hanging BSOD after restart that there has been talk about.

I was gonna post a warning but was beaten to it! After two attempts at an upgrade I was forced to clean install to get it all working again!

Same with me. Upgraded from Tiger and had the blue screen. Ended up clean installing.

Here's Gruber's take on it:

http://daringfireball.net/2007/10/blue_in_the_face

The really guilty party here are Logitech. I had APE installed on my system (unbeknown to me), and my Macbook was Kernel Panicking when I installed the Logitech Control Center. I don't know how you can publicly shame and/or humiliate them for this incredibly irresponsible act of software engineering, but I wish it were possible!

Anyone who voluntarily installs APE should know the risks. Anyone who uses APE in their software should communicate them effectively to the end user. Logitech, apparently, did neither.

I want to shame Unsanity for putting anything in /System at all.

It is indeed bad beans, but I think that the nature of the application leaves them with no other choice for the most part.
