Personal opinion but it doesn't look weird to me.
the TUAW article mentions using cleardock to overcome the problem.....so they want to replace what looks like icons floating in space with.....icons that float in space.
Non-issue in my books

I think it looks looks cool floating on the side...that said I would never use it anywhere but the bottom. The new open application dot thing is more worrying to me..

It's not the look of the icons - some people don't like it because when on the side of the screen, they don't 'sit' on the dock like they do at the bottom.
I don't see the big problem. It doesn't look all that weird. Anyway, I keep the dock at the bottom of the screen.

Cosmetic issues like that aren't a blocker on the release.

According to some developers, having the dock on the side can give one a feeling of vertigo.

Physics: the dock is supposed to imitate the real world with reflections underneath the icons. When the dock is moved to the side, the metaphor collapses (BTW I think the Leopard dock looks like shite, along with the translucent menu bar and the horrible folder iconsthank goodness for hacks!).
I have long used Transparent Dock (an AppleScript) to get rid of the dock background, dim background icons and customise the indicator triangle colour (I use white rather than black).
I also pin the dock to the bottom left. YMMV.

I think it's supposed to be a light underneath the glass 'shelf' that the icons sit on...assuming that the dock is at the bottom of the screen....illuminating open apps.
No doubt there will be hacks to return the dock to the old ways if you really don't like it.

Phew - I thought there was an actual problem. I can't see anything wrong with that dock. It would be weird if they broke the dock, since the Final Cut Pro manual (well, the one for version 6 anyways) says that you should use the dock on the left or right for better use of the Final Cut Pro interface (and the interface of other pro-apps).
I personally always use mine on the left of the screen, with hiding turned on. Seems heaps more natural to me.

I don't mind it too much on the side. The reflections make sense... if you have a mirror that's placed on the left or right side of something it reflects the same way it would if it were underneath...
The massive, massive issue I have with the Leopard dock is the 3 shadows on each icon:
- One the icon designer put there (so it's part of the icon)
- One on the base of the icon, added dynamically by OS X
- One hanging out the top (or left in the image shown when the dock is on the right) that's added dynamically by OS X.
Makes NO SENSE at all and looks hidously ugly. I really hope it's updated before release.
The angle and app open lights I can deal with. They are probably nicer than Tiger. I also like the icons half hanging off the dock.
I'm with vivid2 on the menubar though. Very poor choice.

The issue is that the new dock's icons 'hang' out over the edge of the glossy reflective panel... unlike previous docks. This gives a jagged edge to the design, which is acceptable when positioned horizontally, but unacceptable when positioned vertically.
It's like (if you're a designer you'll know what I mean) when you design something, one of the golden rules is that you never stack type vertically because it looks bloody awful.
