Installing a jabber server and MSN transport

I did the first part ok, it's the MSN transport that I'm having trouble with.

I'm not *that* used to the terminal... and I don't like to think that I could screw up my shiny little MacBook Pro here, but I can't seem to install an MSN transport to my ejabberd 1.1.4 server... anyone got any tips... or an installer?

I'm just doing this so that my MSN transport woes will be *all* to do with me and no longer to do with msn.jabber.no (which might be reliable, but it does go a bit weird every once in a while).

Any tips... or a clue what I'm talking about?

Right... so that makes one person (me) with half a clue... or maybe less, and one person with even less...

C'mon people... aren't there any people out there who have attempted to get a Jabber server running on their Mac successfully?

Does it work reliably enough for you? And does the MSN transport come in that transport package thing?

I'm getting hopeful

Yes it works well. The MSN transport is in the IM gateway plugin readme here

+1 on that.

Openfire has the transport built in, is easy to install, easy to make work, and has a very functional and cool web config interface. Highly recommended.

It works... apart from the bit where I'm behind a firewall and can't connect to the MSN service... but apart from that... WOOT.

Ok, wonderful. I can connect to the MSN network...

I don't mean to be picky... but how come my friends avatars are not showing up...?

I have been looking into this, apparently this is a bug with the whole method, but can be rectified by adding their picture to address book...although that is a pain in the arse.

I am going to try and set up this service when I get some more time, just wondering...does webcam one way without audio work to MSN users?

Cheers

I do not believe you can do webcam to MSN through this transport. I believe it to be text only.

And I think I'll hold out till the avatars auto-update according to what the users avatars really are before I use the openfire server full-time. But as a backup when my usual msn transport dies, it's great!

The jabber.org.au thing is a similar thing... except that it (I believe) uses ejabberd instead of OpenFire, and I believe that after much trouble, they ceased to use the msn transport. So for my computer, instead of "%hotmail.com@msn.(foreign server)" I seem to get "/40hotmail.com@msn.(localhost)".

As foreign host msn transports go, my favourite one is msn.jabber.no for stability, Avatars and status messages.

Unfortunately from time to time it goes down and it doesn't support groupchats.

Installed that a while ago to check it out for a groupware type application, easy to setup.
