Question moving External Drive iTunes library to new machine

I currently have my mac mini's iTunes library on and external drive. I am moving to a new computer and was hoping to be able to point iTunes to this device and not have to transfer the library (a big task , time consuming and would stretch my storage perhaps beyond its limits).

Anyone have a method for this. I can't seem to find anything (hopefully my search wasn't very poor/off track)...

thx
c.

Change the source folder under iTunes: Preferences: Advanced.
Or create an alias of the external iTunes Music folder and put it in the iTunes folder on your new computer.

Incidentally, if you're using Migration Assistant or a cloning utility in your move to a new computer, it will carry the link with it.

Neither of these work as iTunes not recognise the existing files - this is where i have been stuck. How do i get iTunes to recognise files without 'importing' them...

Maybe you could copy the iTunes library files from your old computer onto your new one. Then when you open iTunes hold the "Option" key and point it to the copied library file?

Haven't tried this before so not sure if it will work?
