Last annoying question for today...
RMIT University has a free Wireless Network, using VPN. It says it only supports Windows 98 or better, and surely that means MAC OSX, but no support for mac is available.
I've tried to login through the VPN tab in internet connect, using RMIT's windows pdf guide to configure, but have been able to get it to work.
Has any Mac user got on the system? Anyone have a tip?

I am at RMIT too, and connected fine with the PC laptop but haven't tried the PB yet.
There must be a way...

Nope, RMIT has no OS X VPN client, so you're pretty much shit out of luck there. They use BayNetworks WLAN equipment and I know they don't have any Mac OS X VPN client *at all* on their website or anywhere else.
So yeah... change over to Swinburne Hawthorn, the Cisco client works fine on Mac :P

Looks like they use the Nortel (Contivity) client on RMIT's wireless network setup documents.

The other day I went into the bookshop at RMIT City campus, wanting Office 2004 for Mac, they said to me 'oh we don't keep it in stock, don't get Mac users in here much', which I thought was quite interesting. I'm a media student and that's all we use - Macs!!
Ok, have to run - iLife 05 just arrived at reception...

In one of the documents on their website it says that instructions will be available for Mac OS and IPAQ at a later date. Though I haven't really taken a closer look.
As for swinburne, they make you use the cisco VPN client which is still crappy (i.e. doesn't support auto-reconnect). When will these universities learn and use 802.1x? Even the Department of Education seems to have got this one right with the wireless networks that it's rolling out in every state school.
Edit: Searching google came up with this thread on whirlpool. Seems to give some insight.

hmmm well I work great with Melbourne Uni! Sometimes it won't work, but thats a problem everyone gets (not just mac users) because they don't reset their routers enough or something.
Melbourne Uni uses proxies which you have to manually configure: if there are any Melb Uni students who need a hand setting it up, there are instructions which you can get at Ballieu Library, or just PM me for instructions, or to meet up.

The universitiy's Info Tech Services page will have details on wether they have wireless or not. As far as I know, Deakin doesn't have on campus wireless access

I'm told by RMIT that wireless access for mac users is coming soon (March). They're just waiting for documentation.

In the meantime you could try turning encryption off in the VPN configuration. Check system.log in the Console app to find out where pppd is falling over.

I don't think you'd achieve much. RMIT is using the proprietary Nortel VPN protocol.

It only just went official last year and then they expanded coverage a little, half way through the year. So you'd hope they could get their act together this time and come out with a mac solution. Though funny thing is that support people still say that the wireless network is still testing and stuff but there are all these 'RMIT Wireless' signs around campus, go figure!
