I reckon you should definitely get Garageband womble , if you are serious with working with Music/Audio on a mac. It's a powerful application and a joy to use

If you wait a day or so rumour has it that iLife is getting updated too

It's a line-in, not a mic. So you need something already amplified. A mic normally won't work directly plugged into it unless it's got a pre-amp built in with a line-out connection.

Yep! its audio in. does your mic have a 3.5mm jack though?i thought all studio quality mics had XRL cables. I think you will need some sort of external sound card like the iMic or this beast. check store dj out anyway. there good blokes - they know there kit.

I use garageband which came with the macbook. I have a portable amp/pa from which I run a line out into the computer, using a monster ilink adapter. I have a cordless mic on the pa. I can also plug in my electric keyboard directly to the audio in port on the laptop using the monster and it works well with no amplification. I have used a mic with no pre-amp and it gives a very quiet result. In the future I hope to add midi through a portable interface similar to the ones on storedj. There are some quite cheap solutions on there.

My only concern is that I'll blow the speakers or something if one of the kids turns the volume up too much. Is this an issue, does anyone know?

Good luck!
