Moving iTunes to an external HDD

Quite a few folks on MacTalk run iTunes from an external HDD.
As my iTunes machine's internal HDD is getting full, I'd like to do this.
I tried moving the iTunes folder (inc. iTunes Music) to the connected external HDD.
Then, when I tried to play a track, I got an error message saying that the track could not be found and would I like to browse for it.
Same with every track.
So is there a trick to this that I'm missing?
It'd be great to take the pressure off the internal HDD.

you have to go into preferences, then the advanced tab.

then go find your external drive in the iTunes folder location

Best to follow Apple's instructions step-by-step.

(Incidentally, you should leave the main iTunes folder in your home directory as it contains your library data, album art etc. It's only the iTunes Music one that gets moved).

I have mine setup like this,

My must haves I limit to 15 gigs on my internal drive. I then have everything else over two external drives (I have just filed my first and starting on my second)

Once you have moved the media only over to your external drive go to the itunes prefs and tell itunes that your itunes folder is now on the external drive. From then on all downloads and music imports will be added to your itunes folder on your external drive

The alias solution sounds good.
I did in fact change the location (Prefs>Advanced), but still got the error message: not found (see initial post).
Let you know how it goes.
