can't connect to wireless network

I am trying to connect my new MB to my Belkin wirelss router by Airport.

I can see my wireless network in the Network Setup Assistant: iiNetDCaarbDWgCc

The Setup Assistant says "Selected Network Requires a Password".

The "Mac Support" at iinet have said that although they don't doooo wireless support, they can let me know that the password I need to put in is my macbook admin password.

This cannot be right, and gives me the response "the password you entereed is invalid"

Surely it is asking me for a pssword for the network, not for my machine? Can anyone confirm this for me please? And if so how the hell do I go about finding out what the pssword is if noone at iinet will tell me?

I don't understand the question! I am in the network setup assistant on the new MB. I havent managed to get it going on the internet yet. When I try a password, the WLAN light blinks a few times befor eresponding invalid password.

I have My old Powerbook on the router running by ethernet cable (old PB had no wireless).

There was iinet iconnect software that came with the router, I installed it on the old PB. However the software will not work on an intel mac, so I am trying to get teh mac talking to the router using the Apple Network Setup Assistant.

The password you need to enter is to join the wireless network.

When you originally configured it you must have set a protection method (WEP/WPA). That is why it is asking for your password. This password could be anything.

I mean anything.

Not having any experience with the Belkin Wireless Routers, I am not familiar with the configuration software. It may have asked you to set up a hexadecimal password (hex. code) of 64 characters, or a standard password of any amount (like the AirPort Wireless Base Stations).

Anyway, try entering random passwords like:
  • admin
  • password
  • etc

One of these may work.

Then try any common passwords you use often, as you may have used it for this.

If iiNet set the wireless router up then it will be a lot harder.

EDIT: Do you plug your modem into your Wireless Router, or does it have one built in?

I have a Belkin router and have never had a problem with it. Go to the address 192.168.2.1 in Safari. This will then ask you for the password to get into the router configuration. I think it is defaulted to admin however you may have changed this when setting it up on your other computer. Under the security tab you can change the encryption method (WPA2 is the best I believe) and alter the password.

Hope that helps!

Ben

Its a built in wirelss modem router thingy all in one.

Some progress...I now have new MB running on the router via ethernet cable. Cable is in LAN1 on router. I typed in http://10.1.1.1 into my browser and have found the WEP security key.

Its very long. I copied it to clipboard and went back to Airport. I pasted it in as a WEP and it thought about it for a bit, it has come back with..."There as an error joining the airport network "iinetWDGetc etc""

Maybe it doesn't like the same connection being through the LAN and Arport at the same time?

Don't use WEP, it is more complicated to set-up and very easy to hack compared to WPA. You are better of using WPA.

Im IN!

I tried disconnecting the ethernet and then putting in the WEP. It still didn't work.

Then I tried pastiing n the same string as a different type of WEP. I can't remember what the options were. But it went straight through.

i am now wireless but understand nuthing about what I have just done! Hopefully I won't have to remember what I just did.

The trouble is the help' at iinet didn't know how to fix it so they told me that my etherent port on my new mac must be broken and to call mac about getting it repaired. They suck.

Yeah, from my experience with ISP support they are really good as long as your problem is a common problem that they have logged in their database, but otherwise it can get pretty dodgy.

In the security section of the configuration change the allowed client type to WPA2 Only and the authentication to pre-shared key. Then change the key to whatever you want. Probably not worth fixing it if it aint broken to be honest though, unless you have confidential stuff shared on your wireless network as long as you have some type of security it will suffice.

I am not sure how to get back into the security section of the configuration now. Not that I am planning on changing it i don;t trust myeslf yet. But i would like to be able to see it. Do I need to plug into LAN via ethernet again?

I guess I am worried if I turn everything off then on again in a couple of days I will have trouble with getting the network up again! Am I worried about nothing?

Oh I still just use 10.1.1.1

I thought it related to the LAN port 1 on the router and so woud only worl when ethernet was plugged into it. This shows how little i know, and how much I shouldnt play with the settings now that i finally have it going.
